Character
Lydia Martinez was born in the Central Chilean town of Monte Patria, also known as "La Ciudad Dulla" (Dullahan City). This town is surrounded by a magic field that absorbs everyone's head into their bodies, leaving them headless, while still having ways to see, hear and "speak" (via telepathy). For most people, this effect can be easily reversed by leaving the magic field's influence, but for people born within this town, like Lydia, this effect is permanent.
Fortunately for Lydia, this town also produces "capatars", lifelike loose head replacements that are magically connected to the body and are able to function like a normal head and allow these people to taste and smell, and see, hear and speak through this head. Lydia doesn't mind having no head while she's in her home town, but for the world outside, her capatar has been proven to be a very valuable asset. Even though transformations by magic are well known in this world, having no head is still considered by most to be a disturbing condition. While she was in the Academy, she tried to hide her condition by having a prosthetic neck as well, hidden under a scarf. Only her close friends knew about her headlessness, and she would feel comfortable around them to take her load off her shoulders.
She was a very socially engaged student, taking all kinds of side activities with study unions, arranging symposia and excursions an the like. She was also eager to help people around her in a more professional way, but she also took a particular interest in alien cultures. Her tutors saw she talent for helping people with her mental issues, in particular with a Vidari exchange student, Zh'kel, with whom she had formed a close relationship. Her tutors advised her a career path into counseling.
After the academy she was stationed at the Pioneer as her first mission, first as a deputy counselor, and later promoted to the ship's main counselor. She has stayed there ever since, making friends with a lot of crew members and she was comfortable not having to hide the fact she's headless. She had proven to be instrumental in Holly's path to sentience, and to the crew, she's considered the conscience of the ship. But every now and then, she tries to spend time with her boyfriend Zh'kel and tries to cherish the short time they have together. She hopes she can convince him to join the Pioneer crew, so they can be closer together.
