When the weather gets cold
... it's time to put some floof on.
To protect important areas of the body, the entity grows longer fiber over time when roaming in frigid environments. It usually only takes a couple of days for the coat to reach full length. The structure being similar to the downs of birds, it is far softer - and a far more efficient insulator due to the microscopic growths covering the entire stem of each polymeric feather. The feeling of touching the coat would be similar to touching a solidified cloud. Rougher hands wouldn't even be able to feel that the coat exists at all.
Changing from a cold to a warm environment, the feathers will fall out as quickly as they grow. Better keep a brush and broom ready, because the entity will get quite demanding for help - unless it is preferred to keep those shiny and iridescent feathers as a souvenir...
