The obsidian dragon was never great at flying over the ocean, his smaller wings allowed for quick movements through mountains and swift dives but the winds from the oceans and seas always fought him hard. Despite this, Rakant cannot dismiss the pleasant sensory experience that comes from flying or just walking along the beaches. The smell of salt on the air, the constant flow of wind, the edge of cool, and the beautiful marriage of sky and ocean that's always on the horizon. Today Rakant found a quiet cove to relax in, a few fish had been eaten, and the sun had been expertly basked in; once twilight settled in casting a cyan hue across the land, Rakant took flight and directed himself towards home.
Naturally Rakant is not a great swimmer, he's a very... dense dragon that doesn't have a lot of buoyancy. It takes a great deal of energy to swim and if he doesn't, well the obsidian sinks like a rock! So Rakant is always content to fly and only swims when his mate desires to do so. The beauty of the sea can be appreciated from many angles!
This was a surprise commission (random reward) from the mighty
ERA-7 who did indeed surprise me with a fantastic sea-side sight that I appreciate! I wouldn't normally commission Rakant in a piece depicting him near the sea, but I think that's what makes this piece special. It's something my brain doesn't default to, but an entirely realistic scene that Rakant would engage with!
