Chapter 7 - Together
<<< PREV | FIRST | NEXT >>>
Vayryn and Corwyn get to have their dinner not-date, and it goes adorably, doesn't it? After that, it's time for some more Awkward Conversations Vayryn Would Rather Not Have To Have. (It's always time for that, isn't it?) Hiding things from the world is one thing, but from your friends? Even if they're not the closest, they're still close enough. And friends are a precious commodity to be treasured and held on to, when you're going through something like this.
But there's a new complication arising. There's just something about yinglets that makes the universe determined to never give them a break, isn't there? At least she gets to have her weekly hospital and therapy appointments before she has to deal with that, gives her a chance to talk about what's going on to a sympathetic ear.
And Corwyn drops a surprising revelation on Vayryn. Maybe the universe CAN cut a yinglet a break sometimes, after all...

Me when a new chapter drop: Neuron activation go Brrr
Vayryn when Corwyn call her cute: Yinglet brain go Brrr
But then again, everything go Brr when Yinglet are involved, that's just the base state of Yinglet
(Seriously tough, I'm pretty sure I made some sort of monkey noise when I saw you posted a new chapter, they are that good (and my Yinglet addiction is probably to blame too))

Thank you for the kind words. It means a lot to me to hear that people are enjoying my writing. ^_^
If you're looking for stuff to read between Vayryn chapters, I also have 30 chapters of "Princess Tells Her Story" and 11 chapters of "Exodimensional Hoofbun Flopsy", if you're interested. ^_^

Flopsy is kind of a "superhero comic book in text form". Both of the stories take place in a setting where Earth and Terra are parallel worlds, with Terra being your kinda-generic fantasy world, but the barrier between the two is wearing thin and so violent Chaos Storms are appearing in both worlds. Flopsy was created as a sort of advanced golem, a "Living Construct", by a wizard on Terra, and after not being able to replicate his success, eventually turned to the growing Storms problem to try to find a way to help people. But right as he managed to discover a breakthrough, stabilizing a Storm into a portal between worlds, he was murdered by a cultist of the Sightless Third Eye, and the portal imploded/exploded. Now Flopsy is in the small town of Lapine Falls, Colorado, using a shapechange spell in her collar to appear human, and trying to adapt to this strange and confusing world she finds herself in. A world that's strangely familiar, for reasons she can't figure out... And when she drops her disguise to rescue someone being mugged, she sparks rumors of the elusive figure known as "The Superbunny", the town's new cryptid/superhero, much to the chagrin or poor Flopsy and her friend Ben.
(Each of the stories has a version of my RL boyfriend, so if Ben reminds you of Corwyn, well... It's kinda intentional? ^_^;; )

I'm supposed to be zhere to help zhem. Observe points zhat cause struggling, so I know where to improve zhings. Get feedback and talk wizh zhem to figure out zheir needs. All zhe kinds of zhings zhat zhey can't zhink (Whew, zhat's a mouzhful!) of how to put into words when filling out a feedback ticket.

Every Typhin gets a Tola. What's the point of self-insert escapist fantasy if you can't bring along your boyfriend, right? ^_~
My brain does a big crave too. So big that I had to start writing it all down because I'd been daydreaming so many scenes that they were starting to pile up into a mess. ^_^;;

Do it, I'd love to see what you come up with. ^.^
I find it a lot of fun to write, to the point where if I've got time and energy, I almost always pick writing over most other things. Sometimes I'll be in the mood to play video games, or watch something on YouTube (though I usually do YouTube when I have less energy/focus since it's less demanding) and will do that instead of writing. I do kinda worry it's "taken over" my entire personality sometimes, it's practically the only thing I talk about anymore. ^.^;;

i know i am late to comment on this and my answer is probably later in the story, but so far the story seems to imply that they are still considered a legal citizen, mainly due to the ability to have their name changed, and working with doctors, is this the intent, or am i assuming things that aren't accurate?
It hasn't been challenged, and nobody so far has been willing to argue. But that doesn't mean people won't be hateful or take action against her. It's kind of been the situation of "Nobody else is screaming loudly, so maybe I shouldn't?" Everyone is following the lead of everyone else, and there isn't currently a legal mechanism to strip personhood from someone.
I do have future plans for someone to make that challenge, resulting in a court case, which is why the ACLU have been shown to pledge their support. But it hasn't happened yet. ^_^;;
Not exactly sure where it'll slot in, though.

that was the point i was going to attempt to make, although i was going to use citizenship rather then "personhood", as one is a legal status that's slightly easier to find comparisons to, although they aren't the same thing.
(... why was this so much clearer in my head then on a comment box... ... )
my point i was going to try and make that if he was still considered a legal citizen, then that itself would likely imply the protections they wondered if he would have, and indirectly, citizen implies being a person, even if person doesn't imply a citizen. in rl, major injuries to the brain don't take someone's citizenship away, even if they suffer massive damage or personality changes, (excluding being brain dead), and at the same time, losing a limb or being paralyzed also doesn't
because of that, there is little to say they would lose it from a transformation, especially sense he can still talk
it leaves out one point, they would probably need to prove that the being they are now is in fact the person they were before, and not just some creature that claimed to be someone,
however, it seems that they got past that part at the hospital in the early story.
as a side note, i noticed i made a mistake and marked the character as he in one point in this comment and went back to correct it, but i only replaced the one i noticed, so if there was 2 mistakes, please just ignore the error

I'm pretty sure I got the idea of what you're trying to say, and it's a good question, so I'll do my best to explain it.
Vayryn still has her Social Security Number, for instance. She can produce any amount of information to "prove" her identity. She knows her passwords, the code to unlock her phone, and so on. She still had all her documentation, like her old ID. At the hospital, she brought her implanted IV port (which has a serial number) which proved who she was to the staff. (The only way to get that port would've been to somehow extract it from Mary Shendale's body, which would have likely left some form of evidence.) The hospital, knowing the prestige they would get from having one of their doctors write such a groundbreaking and unprecedented research paper, is also willing to put a lot of resources into making her happy. (She probably could've gotten away with asking a whole lot more, kinda like how Kass was able to ask a lot of Viracroix, now that I think about it. But she didn't think about it.) The caseworkers and lawyers are already used to dealing with things like gender transition and disability, and so were able to basically "push through" most of the changes needed.
Basically, the first links in the chain weren't told what actually happened. They don't know about the whole "yinglet" thing. The lawyers pushed through changes like "name" and "gender" through to the DMV, and the clerk at the DMV saw "Database is updated, I don't know what the procedure is, nothing in my knowledge contradicts what the little rat-creature is saying to me, so... I guess it's legit?" As far as "official paperwork" is concerned, she's still human, simply because there is literally no mechanism to even record something different.
On paper, she still has citizenship and personhood, and the protections that come with them. Whether they will actually stand up to a challenge, that remains to be determined. (Spoiler, they will, because it would be a sad story if she got ruled "legally an animal" and lost everything forever and/or were killed/imprisoned by the state. "Well, Mr. Thatcher, you can't own this thing as a pet, because 'yinglet' isn't on the list of 'approved animals' even with a permit. So, we're shipping it off to a lab to be vivisected for research.") So far, everyone has been following the lead of others, who don't know what to do. Nobody's been willing to "be the first one" to fight her on it. They either follow her lead, or Corwyn's lead, or "the default" lead of "They're talking, and they're in the role of a customer, so I guess they're a customer?" Several people who were borderline were basically convinced to "follow the script" of a usual interaction because there is no "script" for rejecting someone's personhood, if that makes sense. Many people, when they run into an unexpected situation, are eager to fall back on some established protocol. Vayryn has intentionally used this to her advantage.
There's also one extra component to all this: The world this takes place in is a more tolerant, welcoming place. The resurgence of hatred, racism, and raw evil that has marked the last 8-16 years simply didn't happen on this Earth. When Obama was elected President, the racists that threw a fit were ignored like they should've been, and the country continued to progress in a direction of hope and growth, and didn't drag the rest of the world down with it. Trump never rose to power, the GOP didn't go utterly insane and evil, and fascist dictators continued to be seen as a bad thing. There's still some hateful people in the world, but the generally accepted position of society is that you don't openly display such attitudes. (I chose this divergence because the world as it currently is simply makes me too sad to want to devote effort into simulating and tracking. Also, without it, the story would've probably ended quickly when some random twit pops her with a rifle when she steps outside.)
(Also, you used "he" three times and "they" four times talking about Vayryn. She identified as "she" even before the events of the story. This is one of the ways she contrasts Kass from the comic, as Kass still identifies as "he" and prefers people use that when not in the presence of people who would be confused by it.)

i am going to reply twice to this because i need to wait for a bigger screen then my phone to understand that much text(same reason i use text to speech for the story), but ... wow ii missed 3 times , guess i have to move back to typing my comments up in word with a larger font size so i can catch those things,
wanted to say this because it was a mistake, not intentional
its a strange typing issue i have, as i have made the mistake in my own character notes and have to go back and change it, in those cases i thought it was mixing up characters, but maybe its just a "bad wire" in my head
will try and address the main points of the comment using text to speech later, just wanted to say sorry for the mistake in too many words because i cannot seem to be to the point
...

Ok, hopefuly I don’t make this next response too long from this process, but lets see how stuff goes

I didn’t at first think about the ssn or such, or the port, as those are both harder to doubt then an id with someone elses picture on it, if 2 people traded id’s they don’t become the other person, and the picture on the id is supposed to make it harder to impersonate someone else, if someone was transformed, its more then likely that their pictures wouldn’t match, so it would make sense to doubt the id
Although as you pointed out, the port and other elements would be harder to question, as extracting them without evidence would be a challenge, and doing so without someone going missing would be far harder then an id theft stealing someones info and id… although admitly this applies to tf stories in general, and less this story itself
… side note, as far as I know, ‘personhood’ is a social thing, not a legal for formal thing, I could be wrong, but I used citizenship as an example because it has more concrete elements, and to many, you could say that if citizenship was preserved after a transformation(or what ever rl event it could be compared to), then their ‘personhood’ would also have to be preserved.
Part of it is that humans as a society aren’t ready(mentally) to find a social equal that isn’t one of us/them, and have trouble even seeing themselves as equal in any case. The hyper optimistic tf story logic/mental gymnastics that many use is that you can bypass the question by saying that they remained a person because they started as one, convincing themselves that they are in fact still human so they don’t have to consider the alternatives of a functionally equal non human
That and the other mass tf logic of “it could be you” that would cause people to be inclined to accept the transformed people in stories were more then one person is changed.
However, it is interesting to see your story work outside of those 2 optimistic paths and not follow the ‘rights stem from defense’ power I have seen some worlds make.
I haven’t got past this part of the story yet, as to understand it I need text to speech, and that means I need to find time alone in a room to listen, but it has been interesting so far
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As a side note, do you know how you plan on having personhood be challenged, only say this because a somewhat tangent thought showed up in my head, that might happen both as a cause, or as a ‘side effect’
Not going too deeply into the last point… although I do believe its what part of the country you live in, some parts are very bad, some are a lot less bad, admitably I doubt any are perfect
I'm not upset or anything about the mistakes, especially since you acknowledged that they are mistakes and not intentional.
The ID by itself doesn't prove all that much, since the picture doesn't match. But the ID combined with knowing the SSN and the mother's maiden name and being able to answer every question asked, it starts to add up to a "more than reasonable doubt" threshold until eventually the chance that she isn't who she says she is grows too slim to accept. And the port helps, since it's an implanted medical device. She was also on friendly terms with the nurse in the room, which likely helped solidify the "This is Mary Shendale, yes" idea.
Personhood is indeed social as well as legal. For the most part, most people socially have reacted with "[Null Exception]" initially. They don't know what to think, how to act, what to believe, anything when it comes to her. She's a freak, but she's walking and talking like a person. Most of them end up following her lead. "I'm a customer, I'm buying this thing, here is money." This immediately reframes the encounter as "I know what to do now, I know how to handle a customer!" and so they focus on the parts they understand until something happens to make them reject it. There have been a few who don't do that, like Mr. Crenshaw (Corwyn's manager that fought against the idea of keeping her contracted) and Mr. Xagorsky (Vayryn's landlord), for whom the "This is a monster/creature that is not a person" won out before they got anywhere else. Crenshaw constantly belittled her, both to her face and behind her back. "What the Jim Henson's bullshit is this?" and "Of course you're taking ITS side" and probably calling Corwyn "ratfucker" when she's not in the room. Xagorsky responded to "I'm still a person" with a sarcastic "Are you?"
Most humans so far have been so out of their depth that they're not really evaluating anything at all. They aren't seeing Vayryn as "Them" because most of them have no idea what she is, she's not "part of a group" for them to have an opinion of. If there were more yinglets, that might change, but it'd also depend on a lot of events that haven't happened yet. Vayryn worries that there will be more yinglets, because someone unhinged enough to do this to her is likely to do it again, and even without Za Bastard doing it, the tech exists and therefore someone will use it. Maybe not yinglets, but Vayryn believes there's going to be more non-humans sooner, rather than later. Because of that, Vayryn has been trying to act both online and off in a respectable manner to foster a positive public image, since she will be the yardstick by which all others are measured.
The world is a bit more optimistic, I admit, but that's because I felt like the exact real world is too much of an insurmountable problem when it comes to this sort of fight. I'm in a "not terrible" part of the country, not the best but nowhere near the worst. I've left where Vayryn is deliberately vague so I don't get mired in details that aren't necessary, but she's roughly in the north/central area. Wisconsin area, even if not exactly Wisconsin.
The court case is probably going to be in the neighborhood of chapter 15 or so? I don't have a fixed outline or anything, I just have "a number of scenes I want to happen eventually". Vayryn has the least amount of planning (outside of Princess Book 1) because life doesn't really let you plan much. She's living her life, trying to get by, trying to do what she can to tackle problems and make things a little better at a time. It'll happen before Halloween.
Kass (Kassen Akoll) is the main character of "Out of Placers", the webcomic that inspired the story. He was transformed into a female yinglet, and when Trademaster Viracroix strongarmed him into being a research subject, Kass started asking for things like having his pay be sent to his friends as well as the Dinnish bunkhouse (and improvements be made to it). (Prologue 038 - Side note, the panel of Kass at the writing desk has a cropped version that gets shared, where the only part of the text is "...And that is why I'm now a god".)
I'm in a "not terrible" part of the country, not the best but nowhere near the worst. I've left where Vayryn is deliberately vague so I don't get mired in details that aren't necessary, but she's roughly in the north/central area. Wisconsin area, even if not exactly Wisconsin.
The court case is probably going to be in the neighborhood of chapter 15 or so? I don't have a fixed outline or anything, I just have "a number of scenes I want to happen eventually". Vayryn has the least amount of planning (outside of Princess Book 1) because life doesn't really let you plan much. She's living her life, trying to get by, trying to do what she can to tackle problems and make things a little better at a time. It'll happen before Halloween.
Kass (Kassen Akoll) is the main character of "Out of Placers", the webcomic that inspired the story. He was transformed into a female yinglet, and when Trademaster Viracroix strongarmed him into being a research subject, Kass started asking for things like having his pay be sent to his friends as well as the Dinnish bunkhouse (and improvements be made to it). (Prologue 038 - Side note, the panel of Kass at the writing desk has a cropped version that gets shared, where the only part of the text is "...And that is why I'm now a god".)
oddly, text to speach works pretty well, and even gets the different spellings of words most all of the time, it had improved a ton over the past few years, although the first time they counted it auto corrected the word 4 , but not sense then
i wonder if its the text to speech voice's fault i mistyped and put he referencinng the main character, as the default reader for chrome is male
its loves to mess up read and read, and wind and wind, because to it they are the same
i was/am semi surprised it worked for the ying speak as well, it also somehow works for cat talk, and a few other things that i wished it worked for 10 years ago(more like 8), when it freaked out at the thought of ()'s and such. sometimes it auto corrects the word, but not often, the older text to speach i tried many years ago would just be saying the letters out loud
