Monika is a powerful psychic, although this has been to her detriment rather than her benefit. Her psychic powers are rather unstable, a whirlwind in a container waiting to be let out and as such they need to be contained.
It's unclear why her powers are the way they are, although it's suspected to stem from an early life trauma. If this is the case, she doesn't speak about it and does her best to ignore the subject if it comes up. Instead she prefers to drown out the noise, literally, having music going through much of the day if at all possible. Her phone, any mp3 player, speakers at home and the like.
While she doesn't block out sound entirely with music, just having something else playing for her mind to follow generally keeps things calm.
