Major Matt Mason
Captain-major m’Gen stood at attention, tail held high, in a conference room on the planet Lalande while the admiral commanding the Imperial Third Fleet, the general-first who commanded Intelligence for the sector, and the Support captain whose staff were repairing the ShBZ-597 reviewed the various reports and the analysis of the Terran attack. Finally the Admiral straightened in her chair. “Captain-major.”
“Ma’am.”
“Stand easy,” and when m’Gen relaxed she asked, “How was a Terran AI able to do this.”
M’Gen sighed. “I was overconfident, Ma’am.”
“Overconfident.”
“Yes, Ma’am. After our successes at Centauri and Sol Systems, I did not consider this AI to be a threat.” His tail twitched. “I failed to take precautions.”
“True, Captain-major. The ship’s systems will be take several days to purge completely. You understand that these Terrans are not the Ichoniik,” she said. “The Ichoniik have attacked us repeatedly, using the same strategy and tactics, and they do not deviate. The Terrans have shown themselves to be unpredictable, and you became overconfident and complacent.” The general-first, a kam, glanced at the Admiral.
“Will this happen again?” the Admiral asked.
“No, Ma’am, it will not,” m’Gen said. “It was a harsh lesson.”
“Yes, it was. You, your team, and every shlan aboard that ship could have died.”
“Yes, Ma’am.”
The Admiral glanced at the General, and the kam gestured affirmatively. “You are reduced one grade in rank. Do you wish another opportunity to defeat this thing?”
Being demoted hurt, but m’Gen straightened. “Yes, Ma’am. I and my team would like another chance.”
The Admiral smiled. “You will have it. For now, I want you and your team to go over the data you obtained prior to the attack and find a weakness.”
The General raised a hand. “Captain, I will meet with you and your team to go over your findings.”
“Thank you, Sir.”
The Admiral gestured. “Dismissed, Captain.”
“Ma’am.” M’Gen saluted and left the room. Only when he was halfway down the hall did he hesitate and let his shoulders sag.
The attack had almost succeeded, and he was being given a second chance to show that he’d learned from the experience. Failure was always a better teacher than success.
