You guys have no idea how hard drawing an ancient brick wall was. I am super happy with how it turned out... but don't plan on doing it again for a while. LOL!
This drawing was done in pastel pencils and colored pencils on pastelmat.
Inspired by the story of Inanna, the ancient Sumerian spider goddess.
This drawing depicts the gates of Ishtar. One of the wonders of the world. Feel free to google that, they are absolutely incredible. The Ishtar Gate was the eighth gate to the inner city of Babylon. (Modern day Iraq.)
The spider is a Walckenaeri huntsman spider. Eusparassus walckenaeri. When researching spiders native to Iraq, this one stood out to me as unique and breathtaking.

This is part of a spider lore project I am working on with The Tarantula Collective. Check out their latest video to see a deeper dive into Inanna and the importance of the spider in Mesopotamia.
