For my railfan friends!
Sorry about the shitty quality, these pics were taken long before I owned a digital camera. Some years ago I was invited to participate during a run day on a private railroad in Southern California. I fired during the morning, and after lunch tried my hand on the right side of the cab. I'm not the smoothest hogger out there, LOL. Definitely an acquired skill. The locomotive is a Porter 0-4-0. She started life out as a Fourney, then was converted to an 0-4-0 saddle tanker, and is now an 0-4-0 with a tender. Beautiful restoration and a fine running engine. She's been fitted with straight air brakes as opposed to the standard reverse air system. Careful observers will notice the brake control valve is actually a trolly valve for a tractor trailer. I have a pic of the exterior of the engine and train, but I can't seem to upload it. I'll have to try converting it to another format...

I actually have years of experience running steam rollers and traction engines at a living history museum I volunteer at. Figured a locomotive would be pretty much the same. Add air brakes and take away the need to steer. Easy, right? WRONG!!! LOL. I gained a whole new degree of respect for railroad steam men.
If I only had more time I'd get involved with a tourist line and try to work my way onto an engine crew. I'd be happy just firing, I love doing that. I've fired a lot of wood burning boilers, and some coal. All traction engines though, not locomotives. This little Porter was set up as a wood burner, she fired like a traction engine. You ever had the chance to try your hand on a throttle? If so, where at?
