Thank you ^^
There were no directions given for the background from the client, so I found the colours of a country trail to be a good pairing with the character. Midgrounds tend to be where an environment can shine, and its usually where I put most of my energy when making one. A few bars going across the canvas with slight tonal variation can give an impression of rolling hills. Maybe a cloud casts a shadow on top of a hill, and therefore leaves a closer one in shadow with a hill behind in light.
Directly, I might be too obsessed with a smudge tool. This can be handy for blending colour, but can leave your edges looking muddy. I use a square brush for smudging.
As for painting, I found some blocky brushes that I've had on hand for a while to fill in the fields. I used a scattering grass brush for some of the closer-up details, and blended them just enough for variation.
I hope this helps ^^
