In the context of WW2, fear can paralyze and cause people to make rash decisions in order to feel safe. if you stand up bravely you have a better chance of keeping your head figuratively and literally.

When I’d posted it on Twitter it was with a disclaimer that I didn’t need the context of the quote explained to me - I know what it is. My point is that it’s fairly useless in the specific situation at hand and for a kid.

My bad for not including that disclaimer here.

Honestly I agree with you I don't like the quote either. Besides, it's only courage when you act in spite of fear. Fear is a natural response, how you deal with it is what matters.

My father would say things like this to me when I was growing up too, it always bugged the hell out of me. So I just went to my Mother for a hug and solution.

Yeah the thing about quotes is you need to know context of the quote a lot of the times. Not just as the receiver, but as the transmitter. Especially as the transmitter. Just throwing around quotes as if you said something prolific, generally provides nothing for anyone. For example,

im not afraid of the dark just for the longest time was uncomfortable with it. due to lost tapes XP im still not keen on having a closet cause of that show.

In the context of WW2, it was an inspirational quote meant to keep people courageous in a terrifying time.

In any other context, it's completely pointless.

I can relate, and Benjamin Franklin quotes drive me even crazier.

I have a T-shirt with a woodsy scene and that quote on it -- followed by the words, "And bears."

I've got a fear of the dark but we also have bears, deer, moose, and others around here, few street lights, and it takes an hour for police to arrive in an emergency/worst case scenario.
