Directly west of Chicago by several miles, La Vergne crossing is where BNSF's east-west "racetrack" mainline ducks under Canadian National's ex-Illinois Central/Chicago Central & Pacific line to Iowa. Here, a CN freight heads into the city overhead while a Metra commuter train with F40PHM-2 #191 for power, heads inbound to Union Station. I'm really happy with this shot- you can really feel the cold, crisp air with the snow whipping up and the clarity and depth of the scene.

They aren't Bombardier. Metra has several different types which are all similar, but built at different times. Some are as old as 1950, built by Budd, which kept building new cars until the late '70s, some built by Pullman in the 1960s, another batch was built in the late 1990s and early 2000s by Morrison-Knudsen and Amerail, and more new ones by Nippon-Sharyo from 2002-2005. The oldest cars have been rebuilt at least once =P
