Most of the time with older animals, if they show their age through color, the face starts to "white out" or "go gray in the face". In the photo of the beagle the face would have been the same color as the body when he was a pup outside of any white markings it had, but as it got older the face ended up with more white hairs lightening the overall color. The white markings from a puppy and the white from age start to blur together.

So maybe the main left image is more accurate, just in animals it would be lighter on the face instead of the whole body.
