I got this recently, a commission done by
featuring my dragon Sunaseth as a tarot card's subject. The Strength Arcana was what I chose, as I feel it fits myself as a person and Sunaseth as a character pretty well!
Strength.
It is many things. Some first think of physical might, others of the fortitude of one's spirit. Some think first of the courage to act, or to impose one's will upon the world. For Sunaseth, it was a little bit of all of that. But most importantly, it was self-control. The restraint to bear any number of burdens and any amount of disgrace without succumbing to them, while holding tight to the conviction needed to free himself by any means.
Perhaps it was a bit underhanded to play along, to convince his captors that he was just a harmless beast. To make them think his size meant nothing, to coax them to grow lax in their security until they made one simple mistake. But Sunaseth knew it was the only way he could find his way out without killing anyone, without bringing an undue need for vengeance down upon his own head. A controlled escape that minimized the chances his captors would seek his blood.
All it took was enough strength to control himself, to remain patient, diligent. Let his captors 'train' him how they will: he will carry their expectations. Let the years of solitude layer upon his soul how they might: he will find his way out eventually, no matter how much he doubts himself. Control one's self, remain calm, never surrender to those inner uncertainties. No matter how much he yearned for the sky, no matter how much his heart howled to be free, Sunaseth remained in control of himself.
And now, within the place he had slept for years and never once called home, there is but smoke. Now he stands atop the wall, gazing into the great blue yonder, seeing the morning sun. And at last, his burdens cast aside, Sunaseth can feel the sun upon his scales through more than but a single window. Wings flaring, he leaps towards freedom. Of course, he still had the self-control to avoid letting out the joyful roar that burbled at the back of his throat: after all, he was still deep in the territory of his captors.
Strength was many things. And Sunaseth knew that he would need much more of it in the days to come.
