Instead of tape you can use any of the following: a CD Case; the Plastic off a 2 liter bottle; Plastic Overhead sheets. As long as it's clear and you can affix permanent marker to it, it is good to go.
At the very minimum you can just use red over the left eye and the effect is slightly diminished, however still works.
