Kaikon (Kai Koon) was the 23rd Kaiju of the Dark Robot Army and was the featured Monster of the Week in the 19th Episode of the original Dino Mech Gaiking: "Brother, sing for the Future".
_Appearance and Abilities_
Kaikon is a robot like Caterpillar that was among the many Dark Horror Monsters left behind by the ancient Zelans, resting under the island that would become Manhattan, awakening by its on volution in the present time; mostly purple in color with a elongated segmented body with orange fins and dark marks spots through the back; it had Green eyes with yellow outlines, sporting antennas and blade like spikes on the side of its head.
Its main weapon are three dispensers located in the mouth area which fired strings of Gold webbing which encases any target in a casing of super strong gold like concrete, conveniently called Golden Concrete. Instead of legs, it had rocket booster running from the bottom of its body, at least the first segment after the head, then on the sides, with a final Booster on the tip of its tail.
Kaikon is among the few Monsters in the series destroy by the Daiku Maryu, with the help of a new weapon; the Giant Cutter. It is as well one of the few Monsters that by this point in the series – 19 Episode and 23 Kaiju in – is seeing attacking a city: Black Monster on Tokyo (ep2), Tun Yun Lein Pen zapping a part of Hong Kong (Ep.10), Sasoringer plowing through Cairo (Ep.14) and now Kaikon emerging in the middle of New York City. Which is interesting when one considers that a major trope of the Tokusatsu/anime/Kaiju/Mecha genre is Giant Monsters oftenly attacking Big Cities, but Gaiking seems to downplayed said trope during this point in the show.
_History_
The story start when golden strings start emerging from below the streets of New York City; people go mad trying to get some of the gold, only to been blow away by the emergence of the Dark Horror Monster Kaikon, who covers the whole city in the in the webbing, before taking off. The news of its awakening reaches Zela, where the Emperor explained in the past Kaikon would cause humans to fight for its Gold strings. Dankell then provides a really brutal demonstration of the Beast's Substance with a new one – Super Concrete – using two Avian Corps soldiers as test and then drilling on the subjects, which works by breaking the driller, thus creating Golden Concrete. Darius order the matter be mixed into Kaikon's gold for the next fight with the Daiku Maryu.
Meanwhile, as Team Daiku Maryu prepares to take off to hunt for the new monster, Pete is mortified to learn his little brother, Tom, has come to Japan be with him; much to the dismay of everyone, who did not know he had one to begin with. Pete rejects Tom and reprimands Hachiro for allowing a stranger on board. At that moment, they receive news of Kaikon flying over the seas near Shikoku and having no time, the vessel departs for intercept the monster, who has take out a Jumbo Passenger jet. Along the way Tom explains the reasons for abandoning Boarding School and travel to Japan - to be with his brother and join to the rest of the crew, as informs the others their parents are long dead, but Pete comes in and informs them they have reach the Monster. Kaikon begins to cover the Daiku Maryu in the Golden Concrete, and Sanshiro launches the Gaiking to confront the monster, who by now has largely encase the ship in the substance.
The Generals then position their vessels and unleash the Death Cross Formation; as its been pulled into it, the Daiku Maryu is unable to do its Volution Protect due to the Golden Concrete - even its Miracle Drills failed to break it. With time running out, Sanshiro launches an attack on the Grotestars with the Gaiking, breaking their formation and allowing the Ship and the Mecha to escape by diving into the sea; the villains pursue them with another Death Cross but missed them, and the heroes return to base to clear the vessel from the Golden substance with the help of Dr. Kijima who is tasked to studied it.
In the meantime, visiting the kids at the Hospital, Tom explains the reason of Pete's behavior towards him as well his overbearing nature as Captain, while his older brother listens from the other side of the Door; their father was a freighter captain who took his family on a vacation on his ship; one night he fell drunk after dinner and pass out. Not long after, a Hurricane changed course towards their vessel; the ship, their parents and crew were lost – their mother dying when a large crate came lose on top of her – the event traumatized Pete vowing to not commit such mistakes, becoming the "No Feelings, All Business Person" he is today.
After much time of work and clean up, Daimojin announces the name of the new Weapon – the Giant Cutter – which is installed on the vessel; the Daiku Maryu launches to search for Kaikon; the Four Generals launch the Beast to attack the ship who begins to wrap the ship with its Golden Concrete; Pete rapidly deploys the Giant Cutter, ripping through the Webs, then firing missiles blasting the monster's antennas. The Monster then flies low and Yamagatake is order to deploy, but in that moment, the Bazolar is launched with Tom Piloting it to prove his worth to his brother and attacks the Kaikon, who tangles the Bazolar in the Golden Concrete and tosses him around knocking Tom. Kaikon begins to wrapped itself with Bazolar/Tom along with it in a cocoon – The Miracle Drills failing to rip through.
Out of options, Pete suggest to use the Giant Cutter; after the back and forth arguement between him and Sanshiro due to Tom's situation, the former replies giving in to emotion, impairs judgement, leading to things you can't take back - while remembering the tragedy of his parents. Daimojin interjects and allows Pete to carry out his plan, trusting his skill, knowing he wouldn't think of it if he knew the plan would truly risk Tom. The Daiku Maryu charges towards the Cocoon with the Giant Cutter, cutting through it with precision and releasing the Bazolar. Kaikon tries to make its escape, but Pete personally brings the end of the monster; first hitting it with Saur Geyser, slowing it down and delivering the final blow cutting through the monsters from tail to head with the Giant Cutter, disposing of Kaikon.
Time later at the Train Station, Sanshiro, Midori and Hachiro bid farewell to Tom, though he still promises to join the Daiku Maryu. As his train leave, Pete sees his brother departure from a ridge, his only thought in mind been Tom.
