I've seen worse, and I think something similar still runs up here in the north?

Her sister is at a small museum here - thankfully, they tend to take her in for a washdown on a more regular basis - and no picnic tables in the yard.

a good sandblasting and repaint would solve the cosmetic blemishes. what shape the innards are in can't be determined from outside appearances.
amtrak had a bunch of these in it's early days. fp45 or 40 something i think. from the days when passenger units had auxiliary steam generators instead of head end power units. if i'm not mistaken, these were in production more or less right before amtrak was created to rescue what remained of rail passenger service in the u.s. also, i THINK the last units manufactured with steam generators instead of head end 'hotel' power. (pre-amtrak passenger stock still used steam for heating and a variety of other purposes, even though, of course, steam as prime mover had been thoroughly gone for most of a couple of decades! thus pre amtrak north american passenger diesels were equipped with 'mini' boilers called steam generators for this reason. freight units of course did not, and this is why you didn't see them pulling passenger trains except as helpers.)

And that picnic table looks to be in pretty bad shape too.
