I know there is a lot of thoughts about betrayal here but I feel something else from this. The old man stuck in his old ways seeing the end of his era, the changes ahead, but too stubborn or caught in his way to try them. That doesn't mean he doesn't want his daughter and family to be stuck with him. He may not agree but he may see changes ahead that Swift can endure and adapt with her family. Its like when the cowboys and outlaws were dying out and many couldn't adapt but pushed their children to not follow their lives. Its as if he feels its too late for him, and giving his blessings to his daughter to move on. Its very sad, but also very realistic in times of great change.
I hope Swift, her mate, and her kids can find a new path, and her dad's small blessing will help with that. Find solace and a new way with Oren and Rask, get those puppers and other a happier future.

Ok did not expect Gristle to, if I read this conversation correctly, cave in and allow Swift to flee with her mate Red and the pups to find a new home in the Bear Territory.
Of course as others pointed out Gristle has the spear head and could easily plunge it into her as well. Just hoping that he does not.
