A small fire blazed before Kazem’s eyes. His firewood and kindling combined brought the campfire back to life as he tossed more fuel into it, feeding the flames.
“That should do it.” he said, dusting off his hands afterward.
Meanwhile, Farishta reclined on the ground, curling her body around Kazem and the campfire.
“All done?” she asked with a toothy smirk.
Kazem nodded. “Yeah, yeah… I’m just getting a strange sense of deja vu is all. Same time and place for us to sleep, then we gotta pick up that last item from the cordwainer tomorrow.”
Farishta laughed. “Let’s just hope it’s not a complete repeat of all that excitement from today!”
“Well said.” he replied, sighing. “At least we have some more time to kill.”
She fluttered her eyes. “Indeed. Now… where were we?” Farishta promptly repositioned herself, bringing her body a bit closer to Kazem. "Oh, right. Now I remember. You were utterly failing to help me brush my tail earlier!"
Kazem crossed his arms. "Can you blame me?"
"No, no, of course not!" Farishta replied, giggling. "But tell me, which part of my body do you find the most… cute?" She raised her padded foot and scrunched up her toe beans. "My paws?" She paused and swished her big and fluffy tail. "Or my tail? I do take pride in both, but I’m super curious about whatever you might think!”
“What kind of question is that?” he asked with a sneer.
Farishta snickered. “A hard one it seems! Why?”
“It’s just that… uh…” Kazem said, scratching the back of his head. “What’s our relationship at this point?”
Her head tilted to the side. “We’re still traveling companions, are we not?”
He shrugged. “I guess. It’s just that with everything that’s happened so far and you asking me questions like this…”
“Well, what’s wrong with my question?” she asked, laughing a little.
Kazem cocked his head. “You keep giving me mixed signals, Farishta. I still don’t know if all the intimacy and cuddly crap on your behalf is a mergich thing or a you thing. Questions like that aren’t really helping…”
She rolled her eyes. “Oh, Kazem. I just want to know your preferences! You don’t have to answer my question if it makes you uncomfortable, but I’d really appreciate your input!”
“I’ll answer your question if you answer one of mine.” he said, bringing a hand to his chin.
Her eyes sparkled at his words. “That sounds fair!” She leaned even closer to his position. “Now tell me… what about my body do you find the most… appealing?”
He stayed silent for several seconds before staring at her face. “The first thing that comes to mind is your eyes.”
Farishta blinked several times. “Oh?”
“They’re probably your most prominent feature.” he resumed with another sigh. “Hells, the first thing I saw when we first met was your purple eyes staring straight into my soul. Bright, feline… the only thing I could see when you wore your black balaclava. Very unique. Pretty to look at too.”
“Aw!” She paused and brought her hands to her cheeks with a wide smile on her face. “That’s so sweet of you to say!”
Kazem chuckled. “It’s just the truth. Not really an opinion if you ask me.”
She looked down at her feet, rapidly unsheathing and retracting her toe claws. “But… you like my paws too, right? Those are usually the first thing smaller people see!”
“And maybe the last if people aren’t careful.” he said, smirking.
Farishta scoffed. “Don’t make me step on you again, you silly little thing!”
Kazem shook his head. “That’d just prove my point. As much as I’d like to ask about this recent fixation you seem to have with your paws, I have another question in mind.”
Her tail shot up. “Maybe it’s just the new sandals…” She stopped speaking to shake her head. “Either way, feel free to ask whatever you want!”
“I will.” he said with a nod, directing his attention to the campfire. The flames seemed to burn brighter and brighter as darkness fully enveloped the surrounding forest. “So, tell me… is this whole… dynamic developing between us purely platonic or… something more?”
Farishtas found herself at a loss for words before glancing down at him. “I… I guess that depends! What do you mean, exactly?”
His eyes met her own once more. “I guess there’s no point in beating around the bush about it. You’ve been pretty playful and flirtatious now that we’ve gotten more acquainted with one another, so I reckoned you probably had an interest in me, but I didn’t know how to press you about it since I wasn’t really sure. You know… with the size differences and you being a different species and all that.”
Her ears folded against her head. “I think I know what you’re getting at…”
He broke eye contact for a moment. “Then… are we…”
“We are!” she said with a smile, interrupting him. “We’re definitely soulmates at this point! Like you said, our time together has been brief, but I definitely think a special bond has already developed between us!”
Kazem’s reaction could only be described as a tad flabbergasted. “Uh, soulmates?”
Farishta smiled and closed her eyes. “Yeah! I think I said this before, but I believe the gods meant for us to find one another. We complement each other so well in spite of all our differences!”
“That’s not really what I was getting at…” he said, shrugging his shoulders once more. “But whatever.”
She slightly stuck out her tongue upon opening her eyes. “Then what did you mean, my little mouse?”
He sighed. “Forget it. Maybe we can talk about it later once we figure a few things out.”
“Is it because we’re moving too fast?” Farishta asked with her tail swaying. “Or at least that’s what I recall you mentioning earlier!”
Kazem shrugged again. “I guess? I don’t know. You were already ready to cuddle up and crap within a day or two of meeting each other.”
She snickered a bit. “And that’s a problem?”
“It’s not really normal… at least by human standards.” he answered while looking away.
“And I’m not a human, am I?” she asked with another smile. “You even said that sleeping together in the wilderness was actually practical! Plus there’s nothing wrong with showing any humans I like a little affection… right?”
He chuckled, rubbing his eyes. “So you normally cuddle any humans you like?”
Farishta glared at him for several seconds. “I mean… if they’re fine with it and I want to do it, sure! What’s wrong with that, Kazem?”
The man in question looked up at the night sky. “Probably nothing. Most people I know tend to reserve that kind of stuff for people that are close to them though. Not people they just met. It’s… weird. Feels fake on some level if you give that kind of love and affection to absolutely everyone.”
“I still don’t see the problem with that…” she said, imitating Kazem by shrugging herself. “And if it makes you feel any better, you’re one of the only humans I’ve shown that kind of love!”
His head perked up. “Love?” He shook his head and sneered. “You love a little man like me?”
For a while, Farishta didn’t say anything. She simply lowered her head next to Kazem until he found himself face to face with her thin, black lips and whiskers almost brushing against his body.
Kazem immediately braced himself.
Farishta made a wry smile at his reaction with a few fangs visible. She stuck out her tongue for a brief moment, which then turned into an outright lick. It started slow and sensual around Kazem’s lower torso before moving faster, smothering his face for several seconds, then flicking the hair on his head as tradition dictated.
Following this, Kazem wiped trace amounts of her saliva off his face. “Ah… I see.”
Farishta let out a rumbling purr. “Do you like it when I do this to you or do you want me to stop?”
Blood flushed his face. “I… don’t want to admit it, but it’s really nice…”
“Then why are you holding back?” she asked, narrowing her eyes. “Something always seems to be stopping you whenever I try to truly embrace you! What is it?”
He scratched the back of his head. “Maybe a sense of professionalism? I don’t know if it’s a good idea to get too close either since I try not to mix business with pleasure…”
Farishta giggled in response. “How cute! You always act so tough and assertive too, despite being so much smaller than I am…” A mischievous glint appeared in her eyes as she paused and tilted her head to the side. “But then you get so flustered whenever I start getting all cuddly and calling you my little mouse and stuff!”
Once more, Kazem crossed his arms. “I… I’m just not used to it. Whether I like it or not, some big fluffball like you is far more powerful than I am, if only because you’re a giant.”
“Interesting…” she said before bringing a hand next to him. “Maybe you just like big, fluffy girls!”
He watched her lower her hand to the ground to create a platform. “I’m not really sure anymore…”
She formed another wry, catlike smile. “I’m making you learn a lot about yourself it seems! Still, I won’t force myself on you… unless you want me to, of course!”
Kazam disrupted her by scoffing, staying silent otherwise.
She stuck out her tongue. “With that in mind, do I have your permission to pick you up?”
“Always.” he answered with a nod. Kazem promptly stepped onto her open palm for emphasis.
With a smile still on her face, Farishta gradually brought Kazem to her upper torso and simultaneously reclined against the ground. She then placed him near her neck. Fluffy fur soon surrounded and cushioned Kazem from several sides thanks to the fluff’s strategic location around her throat. He found himself lost within it for several seconds before regaining his bearings and readjusting his positioning as his upper body poked out.
“Comfy?” she asked, slightly stretching her arms and legs.
The sheer sensation made Kazem let out a sigh of relief. “For now.”
Farishta closed her eyes and stuck out her tongue again. “You say that like you're not always going to be cozy like this! You’re as snug as a bug, really!”
Kazem almost shivered as Farishta shifted left to right, causing him to slide down a bit during the process. “Eh… careful, Farishta.”
Her ears perked up. “Oh? Is there a problem?”
He glanced down before looking away. “How do I put this? This whole angle means I might accidentally fall into your shirt…”
“My robes?” she asked, glancing at her upper body. Another smirk promptly spread across her face. “Ah, I see what you’re talking about. Don’t worry! You’ll still be perfectly safe if you end up in my cleavage somehow!”
Kazem’s face turned red as he bared his teeth. “Seriously?”
Farishta laughed. “Yeah! I actually carry small and valuable things inside there sometimes. Now that I think about it… you also fall under that category… so it’d probably be way easier than just holding you with my hands!”
He rubbed his eyes at her words, groaning. “You’re killing me, woman.”
“If anything else, I think I just figured out the whole transportation issue!” she replied, purring. “You wanted me to find a way to easily carry you without using my hands, right?”
“This…” Kazem said, staying silent for a moment. “This is exactly what I’m talking about. You’re already acting like I’m your little boyfriend with teasing shit like this!”
Farishta frowned. “What? They’re just breasts…”
“And do mergich men find those appealing?” he asked while keeping his eyes closed.
She looked up at the night sky. “Maybe? I’ve only known or encountered a few of those as it is…”
Kazem opened his eyes, looking up to see her muzzle and whiskers within his peripheral vision. “And by appealing, I mean like… attractive in a potential mate. Not sure how to word it.”
“I don’t know!” Farishta answered, failing to contain her snickering. “Do you?”
“Come on, you know exactly what you’re doing…” he said, looking almost defeated.
“And what’s a boyfriend?” she asked, tilting her head. “I believe you already qualify as one if you’re both a boy and my friend!”
His eyes narrowed. “You’re joking, right?”
Farishta scratched behind one of her ears. “I have heard the term from humans before… I just never asked what it meant! Would you care to explain?”
He stayed silent for a time. “I’ll just assume you’re serious for a moment if you actually don’t know. It’s kind of like being… mates? If a human man and woman hook up, they call each other boyfriend and girlfriend or whatever while they’re still dating.”
“I thought that was a husband and wife?” she asked with a wry smile. “What’s the difference?”
“It’s a… type of relationship?” Kazem said, gazing off into the woods. “I might not be the best person to explain these sorts of things to non-humans…”
“Please do!” she said, nodding. “The monastery never had any books about human mating rituals or courtship. I’d be fascinated to hear whatever you have to say about them!”
He scratched his chin. “Right. Well, it’s kind of like the romantic equivalent of a friend and a best friend when it comes to the differences. Maybe an acquaintance and a friend might be a better comparison. Regardless, if a man and woman are attracted to each other, they’ll start dating to see if they’re… meant for each other. I don’t know. It’ll be a boyfriend, girlfriend deal in that case. If the relationship works out, the relationship might turn into getting married, but it’s usually a more casual deal where both parties are still figuring things out and aren’t fully committed yet…”
Farishta’s tail shot up. “That definitely sounds like us!”
Once more, Kazem couldn’t stop his face from turning red. “Eh… if you say so. I still don’t know if you’ve been playing dumb or not, but hopefully that explains things from earlier.”
“Do we have to make it official then?” she asked, fluttering her eyes. “Is that what’s been making you so uncomfortable this whole time? Because I definitely wouldn’t mind having you as my boyfriend, if only to try things out and see if we’re really compatible with each other!”
He froze upon hearing her words, not saying anything in return.
Farishta pressed her nose against his back, practically nuzzling him. Whiskers subsequently brushed his arms as another rumbling purr escaped her throat. “So? What do you say? Do you want to officially be my little boyfriend while I can be your big, fluffy girlfriend?”
“I…” he replied before biting his tongue. Kazem then glanced at the ground.
She frowned. “What’s wrong?”
Meanwhile, Kazem rolled his shoulders and groaned. “Fine.”
Farishta’s ears and tail perked up. “It’s official then?”
“Some part of me feels like this might be wrong or that it won’t end well…” he muttered, grunting. “But life's too short. I really like you and wouldn’t mind something like that.”
Her tail immediately began thumping against the ground, and a wide smile adorned her face. “Oh, Kazem! You have no idea how happy it makes me to hear you say that!” Before he could even respond or react, she began peppering his backside with a flurry of kisses. Some were simple pecks thanks to her thin, black lips while others were more broad licks that made him shudder. It lasted for only a few moments before she stopped, giggling to herself afterward. “I… I had no idea if you felt the same way or just thought it would be too weird!”
Kazem caught a brief glimpse of something sparkling in her eyes as he looked up at her. “I had a change of heart. It’s been one hell of a date in the meantime, I’ll tell you that much!”
She laughed at his words. “Well, I think it’s just getting started! Especially if you won’t mind me getting more… intimate with you anymore!”
“Just don’t do it in public…” he said, sneering. “Can’t let people know that I like soft stuff from time to time. Might ruin my image.”
Something fluttered in Farishta’s heart as she made a toothy grin. “No promises, tough guy!”
As Farishta lowered her head to nuzzle him once more, Kazem closed his eyes and felt her cold nose pressing against his torso before he wrapped his arms around her muzzle to embrace it.
However, only time would tell if their mutual crush would ultimately end in more tears.
