Space junk reentering over southern Colorado last night.
At first when I spotted it I thought it was an airplane with its landing lights beaming through thin clouds. It was in a section of the sky where I frequently see planes on approach to DEN (Denver international)
However it just didn’t look right so I watched a bit more closely, and that’s when I saw the break up happening.
I scrambled to get my phone out and the camera opened and fortunately I was able to get this shot.
In total the event lasted between 10 and 15 seconds, and it was about as bright as the full moon, spectacular!
I’ve seen many large meteors, and got some excellent views and pictures of comet Hale-Bopp when it passed by many years ago.
But this is the first major breakup I’ve witnessed.
Update!
This was indeed space junk coming back in.
Turns out it was in fact a SpaceX mission on an uncontrolled reentry…

I put in a report to AMS (American meteor society). And have been looking at the other pending reports….
This event was seen in Colorado, Arizona, and Texas.
I’m curious if it was space junk like I believe it was, who’s was it?
Most if not all space agencies have an agreement to de-orbit over the South Pacific east of Australia.
So who lost something over US soil?
