Pretty bird! I can't really tell but does she have something in her talons? Perhaps she caught herself a meal? Might explain why she didn't go anywhere =]

OH! I forgot to mention that.

She caught a rodent, my guess is a squirrel. She was just perched up there nomming on it. That's why she was so still for so long.

Funny enough hawks don't fear humans that much I have had several closeish encounters. You can get decently close before they get upset and fly away. With talons that fierce and such a sharp beak i wouldn't fear much either. Recently I too had a small hawk in my backyard eating a sparrow though Since she was a small one she was more skittish and my picture not as dramatic. Good shot. I'm not an expert but A swanson's hawk or the common red tail are likely suspects. But red tails are quite large birds. I am happy you got to see her up close to appreciate how cool birds of prey are * puts nerd glasses away *

Looks like a Peregrin falcon. I have one stop and land on our deck railing a few times this year.. I have one picture but it isn't all that great..
