Summer, 1423
Slightly out of breath, Oevcn continued swimming upstream, looking for another beach or ford to get to. However everywhere he looked was sleek, unbroken stone, a palisade as inaccessible as any wall.
The tired figure was just about to give up and turn around when suddenly he found a hidden opening among the rocks: a small path appeared and worked its way through the dry ravine of a seasonal creek, just below the sheer cliff face of the Northern Heights where the sounds of clashing arms and gonnefire echoed. Half covered by trees and with the palisades overhanging above, it almost looked like a secret passageway.
With a whoop of joy Oevcn leaped onto shore, and began running up the steep and narrow pathway as fast as he could. If he could just get to the top he would be able to join with the Arcadian forces atop the hill and then-
The cyno suddenly ground to a halt.
His armor!
Athur and Jayna would be furious if Oevcn the Brave didn’t fight with some protection on!
With a curse the cyno turned and ran back to the ravine, jumped into the river, and swam back to the beach from which he had ventured from slightly less than an hour beforehand.
Back ashore, Oevcn quickly shook off as much water as he could, then gathered his belongings and began to dress up, throwing first his undermail and then his quilted armor over his head like a madman.
He was missing out!
The din of battle continued, with the sound of a massive charge surging near the apex of the Northern Heights-the cyno had no idea who was attacking and who was defending and who was winning at this point.
Breathing heavily, Oevcn scrambled, trying to put on his greaves and cuisses while also trying to position his breastplate correctly and strap on his sallet at the same time, his gonne and spear dangling under the crook of his arms as he headed back towards the sound of fighting.
After several excruciating minutes of absolute chaos, somehow all of the cyno’s clothing and protection more or less went on correctly.
Finally!
With a grin, the cyno tightened his straps, lit his matches, and readying his gonne and powder over his head, charged back towards the river.
And then a hand abruptly grabbed Oevcn by the back of his coif, abruptly yanking the cyno back.
“There you are! Where do you think you’re going?” Athur yelled.
“Fighting the invaders?” Oevcn meekly replied.
“The Northern Heights are lost, my boy. Everyone’s pulling back.”
“But I’m-”
Athur gave a look of trying to maintain his patience.
“It’s a horrific slaughter that we’re losing in the dead of night. I’m forbidding you from risking your life for a lost cause, and I think Jayna would agree with me. Got it?”
Oevcn nodded.
“Good.” The Aqueilian began dragging the cyno back towards town. “You may prove yourself in some other situation Oevcn the Brave, but it will not be this one.”
