Two CTA Red Line trains pass each other at the north portal of the State Street Subway, just south of the Armitage station in Chicago's Lincoln Park neighborhood, kicking up the powdery snow left from the record-breaking blizzard two days ago. The CTA rail system has recovered from the blizzard well... its bus system... not so much. The sixth car in the train closest to the camera has a huge mound of snow on its roof!

Yeah, I've heard of that grade- it's famous. I guess the equivalent in the USA would be the Saluda Grade, in North Carolina. It's 5.1% at the steepest, and it's not a rack railway! It's been disused by Norfolk Southern since 2002-ish, but the rails and everything else is all still there- it might be reopened at any time. It has safety spurs that lead uphill into mounds of earth, in case of runaways!

That's steep.
The steepest section of track still in use here is the 3% grade through the 5.3 mile Otira tunnel.

Though the steepest railway grade in New Zealand was the gravity worked Denniston inclines 83% grade.
