Day version
Hello, and welcome to a little series I'm starting where I get a commission of my absolute most favorite things, give some detail on them, and talk about them. What I like feels very niche to me, and like something I can hold personally to me. I wanted to be able to share as much as I can about my niche little passions towards such things, and so we begin with the first installment. Sweepers, from the 2005 film Robots.
The Sweeper first appeared in the film at 26:45, and has since shown up 6 more times throughout the film. It is not known if the Sweepers are truly sentient, due to the fact they seem to mindlessly wander the streets, sweeping up any garbage or unlucky outmodes. Though, since almost everything in the Robots universe was sentient, it is safe to assume they are, especially due to their large singular eye, which, even though it almost never moves, it can. The eyeball can also be a sort of headlight at night, casting a spotlight over the road. The brushes of the Sweeper can separate from the center into two equal halves on each arm, allowing access for the mouth to open at a 90 degree angle. At the ends of both brushes when separated, are metal claws, which can be used for grabbing unfortunate victims. Though these metal beasts seem slow and easily beaten just by going on the sidewalk, you should never underestimate them. Unfortunately, as you can see, I did just that. When sweeping larger prey items, the Sweeper will open its mouth and trap the victim inside. The jaw is aligned with razor sharp teeth, and when opened, more sets of teeth can unfold from inside the mouth at a 90 degree angle to close over the jaw when the jaw is lowered down. Once caught, there is no way out. You must wait until the Sweeper finished its route, and takes you to the dreadful Chop Shop, where they melt you down and turn you into something else... But that's a "My Favorite Things" discussion for another time.
Why do I love these? I saw the movie as a kid, and as soon as the Sweeper came on screen, I immediately fell in love. I have a thing for robotic and machine designs. Whatever the designers for the film did when making the Sweepers, they did so much right. The design is so simple, yet effective. The way the body sways when going down the road. The way the arms jitter and stutter forward and back as the Sweeper chugs along. The squeaking and creaking of their rusty bolts. They were big, really big. And you could just feel the intimidation with their presence. The first appearance well.. didn't really feel like a big deal. It picked up what was probably a little green severed head of another robot, brought it to the Chop Shop, and that was it. After meeting the villains, we head back to the main cast. Then the next appearance is brief, really brief. You see it chugging along out of frame as a large cogwheel ride of some sorts takes over the frame before the camera brings us back to our main cast yet again. Still doesn't seem like much of a threat, just a normal thing in the city, especially since you could see another in the background of its first appearance. But then the main characters panic at seeing it come towards them, and they run and hide, giving us exposition on how bad they, and the Chop Shop truly are. And that's when it hits. These blue mindless sweeping machines are more of a problem than what was original credited.
To this day I'm still left with questions about these somewhat mysterious beasts. Were they truly mindless? Just under the evil Madam Gaskets control? Did they enjoy the work of hunting the poor? Could they feel? Were they truly so dangerous? Or only if you stood in their path? And most importantly... What happened to them after the Chop Shop was destroyed? Did they all shutdown at once? Continue on Sweeping until they ran out of juice? Was the Chop Shop like their home and then they had no home to go to? Indeed, Sweepers will remain one of my absolute most favorite fictional things for the rest of my life. I just love the idea of a city having such a casual threat roaming around. The threat of something as minor as a truck driving slowly down the road. A threat that is so prominent, yet seemingly so ordinary at the same time. Sweepers have caused me to have a strong interest in all Sweeping related vehicles both irl and fictional. Thank you Blue Sky Studios, for making Robots exist, and with it, the Sweepers.
I hope you all enjoyed this. If you've made it this far thank you deeply for your time on hearing out my incredibly niche liking. As I said before, I plan for more of these to come, as I have many more favorite things that I feel not many people give enough attention to. If you happen to have this same niche as I do, feel free to let me know! (: I'd be happy to know just how many people out there can appreciate the things I do, in the same way that I do.
Again, huge shoutout to
eoss_air for making this incredible piece. The child in me is very very pleased, and I will cherish this piece for as long as I live.
