I can never understand how this manages to happen so frequently...like, you have to UNLOCK the door to open it from the inside too and you presumably don't re-lock it while you're just going to retrieve mail or a package.

TBH, there are doors meant to auto lock on closing. Usually in rented apartments and hotels.

Some apartments, I've noticed, have self locking doors. I think as a deterrent to keep intruders and/or homeless people from getting into the building.

My front door actually does have a one way lock like that. We rarely use it though. For obvious reasons.

I mean, I normally have my bedroom door locked, but sometimes you think it's unlocked, only for the lock to flick back into place (if it's slightly unlocked and too far over to the locked side)

Yo! My old bedroom door was the same, I ended up getting really good at picking locks thanks to that (we'd lost the key for it ^^;)

see I lock my bedroom door when I leave it anyway, coz all it takes is like, a knife or a comb or a screwdriver and I can unlock it. It's not a very good lock lmao

My house has a digital lock, locks after a short while.
Of course... it also opens with a password or my phone app...

Lock my keys in the car all the time though.
Used to manually locking by flipping the switch as I'm getting out.
Not as fancy as the house lock.

There are some door locks that only lock on the outside, but the knob on the indoor side is always unlocked even in a locked state where it is locked on the outside. My house is over a hundred years old, and the front door had only been upgraded at most two times, I think. It has happened to me enough times before, so I had to remember to make sure it is unlocked on the outside when I plan to be outside for a bit, so I can get back in. It’s also why my house has a backup emergency key in a key safe protected by a four-digit tumbler combination lock, and I know the combination to access it in an emergency if I get locked out by accident. Good thing I live rural on a private farmland with good privacy.

Whoopsie should've kept emergency key next times

I always carry a spare house key on me because my front door lock will lock itself it is bumped to hard

Have a spare car key in my wallet because I lock my keys in too often.
When I first ordered the spare I locked my keys in. And the spare accidentally got rerouted to Guam for whatever reason.
That was an annoying week.

Oh do I ever want a follow up with a locksmith coming over X3

Do you have other people in the house? If not why are you banging on the door? Also do you know how to break into your own house? As bad as that sounds that's actually a useful skill to have in case you ever lock yourself outside of your house or car.

Happend to me once... luckaly not padded xD gave my neighbor his Pakage i took because he wasnt home... in this moment my door shut because of a windy day... luckaly i gave my Grandma a Emergency Key for this kind of Situations... and i got some Firefighter friends because i work as an EMT, if the key didnt work (because my key stuck on the inside) i could have call them ;D luckaly it worked with the Emergency key ^^
