Even though this isn't your own handiwork or style, I recognized the character immediately before noticing the authorship -- you are owed a lot of credit for managing to create such a memorable and distinctive character design, and all without resorting to wild color combinations and novelty features!

It's true, i don't like complex designs, like when character have a lot of things hanging on it. I like it when outlines of objects on character add up to something concise. In such designs i can highlight these authors to make it clearer:
