I have a copy of the book (illustrated by Inga Moore) & in it it's "he" "his" etc. all the way. (And in both the text and the art, he's definitely on the fey side.) BTW, have you ever seen his Rankin-Bass animated TV series? It has a very kinky thing going on with a little girl who loves to torture him with daisy petals that make him breathe fire even though it's the last thing he wants to do!
