Yet more "adaptive leftovers" cooking from this weekend.
This recipe makes use of the ingredients from two other recipes wuff created to use up leftovers from the freezer this weekend. The "Ham & Beans Soup", found here: ( https://www.furaffinity.net/view/52152197/ ), and the pork broth left over from the pulled pork recipe used to create the pulled pork grilled sandwich, the pork of which is found here: ( https://www.furaffinity.net/view/17967568/ ).
That leftover pork juice is amazing! So rich and full of flavor! Wuff couldn't stand to toss it out. And when we created the bean soup, Vrghr got an idea to combine the two to create home made baked beans from scratch.
WOW! Are these ever tasty!!
And even better, aside from the cost of the seasonings in it, these are practically "Free" from just using leftovers and extras from the other recipes.
For a first try at making "scratch baked beans", Vrghr is thrilled with the results! REALLY looking forward to making more of these in the future!
INGREDIENTS:
2 qts Ham & Beans soup (from recipe here: https://www.furaffinity.net/view/52152197/ )
1 med Onion, rough chopped
1 C Pork Broth/Juice (from recipe here: ( https://www.furaffinity.net/view/52152197/ )
1/2 C tomato Ketchup
1/4 C pure Maple Syrup
3 TBS Molasses (not black strap)
2 TBS Cider Vinegar
2 TBS minced Garlic
2 tsp Dijon Mustard
2 tsp Worcestershire Sauce
2 tsp Smoked Paprika
2 tsp Tabasco Sauce (or other favorite hot sauce)
1 tsp ground Sage
1 tsp Chili Powder
1/2 tsp ground Black Pepper
2-3 Bay Leaves
DIRECTIONS:
Using a sieve over a bowl to capture the broth, drain the ham and beans to get just the beans and ham. Reserve the sauce (It is DELICIOUS) to create a nice bean broth and veggie soup later
Add the drained beans and all other ingredients to a large heavy pot and stir together
Bring to a good simmer, light boil, and cook, stirring occasionally, for 90 min to 2 hours, or until the beans are thickened to the desired consistency
Remove the bay leaves
Serve in warmed bowls

Good ol' baked beans is such a lovely comfort food. And immediately reminds wuffy of cookouts with burgers & hot dogs, and a nice side of baked beans on a paper plate wuff had to fold slightly to keep them from running about and mixing in with everything else! *grin*
Thanks for the tip - Vrghr needs to look that show up! Have always been interested in how these things are made.
