In a way, the reverse is canon. Kai had absorbed the chi of at least seven others in the spirit realm, at least one of which was confirmed to have been Tai Lung. So if Po had skadooshed himself earlier, this might have actually happened.
One could also argue that this is similar to the way Po defeated Kai. And I'd like to think that, if Kai absorbed chi by quite literally voring them in the spirit world, the result would have been him swallowing Po but not being able to finish him off as he got wailed on from the inside.
