GLPW: Ultimate Legends is a wrestling video game featuring the stars of Global Legend Pro Wrestling. A popular game among collectors due to its unique playstyle among wrestling games and relatively limited release numbers, Ultimate Legends is known for its gameplay style, which borrows more from traditional fighting games rather than standard wrestling games. The game is also known for its grandiose portrayal of GLPW superstar Jin-Yuta.
-Gameplay-
The game can be played in single matches, either single player or multiplayer via Arcade Mode, or in Legends Mode, the primary campaign. In Arcade mode, players can choose from a variety of match types and then choose their character from a roster of 14 immediately playable characters (a fifteenth character was added in a subsequent update, making the total roster 16 when counting the secret character). After selecting their characters, players are given the option to select a venue. Once all the options have been chosen, the players are shown the character's entrances and the match begins. The gameplay style is somewhat reminiscent of 2.5D games but with more movement options, with characters being able to move left and right on the screen, as well as up and down, although they are only allowed to sprint left or right. Similarly, players may only whip their opponents into the ropes on the left or right. Players may climb any of the four corners to perform diving moves. Players may exit the ring to acquire weapons or perform environmental moves although the camera angle remains fixed. Movesets and movement animations are unique to each character. Players can perform signature moves by partially filling their Special meter. The meter is filled by damaging the oppoent. The player can store signature moves to use later, at the cost of expending the Special meter down to the next lower threshold. If the Special meter is entirely filled, or if the player has stored 3 signature moves, they can perform a much more powerful Finishing Move, also unique to the wrestler they are using. Most matches end either with a 3-count pinfall, or via submission.
Characters have certain traits associated with them. These traits can be a passive effect related to the wrestler themselves, or an active trait, activated with certain moves or actions. For example, Koboshi possesses a trait known as "Warrior Spirit" which gives him a certain chance to kick out at the count of 1 if pinned following an opponent's Finishing Move. The likelihood of this occurring is dependent on how many Signatures Koboshi has stored at the time.
-Legends Mode-
The main campaign of the game is Legends Mode which sees the player play through the ranks of the game's roster en route to the Championship Match. The story of this mode is that Jin-Yuta, leader of the stable SHINDEN, has relinquished the GLPW World Championship out of respect for the title, following "disgraceful" actions perpetrated by underlings of his group. Stepping aside to let somebody else claim the championship, the belt is won by Shinu Owari, who orchestrated the misdeeds of SHINDEN to begin with. As the player makes their way to the match with Owari, they're occasionally greeted with screens featuring Jin-Yuta, shrouded in shadow, offering cryptic messages referencing the player's progress. Should the player lose a match on the way, these messages will stop appearing. Finally, the player will make it to the championship match, set in the most visually impressive venue. The player must defeat Owari, who up to this point will be their most difficult opponent, to win the championship. Under normal circumstances, this is where the game ends. However, if the player is playing on Normal difficulty or higher, and has not lost to any of the previous opponents, including Owari, then during the player character's coronation, the celebration will be interrupted by Jin-Yuta himself. Feeling the player's performance as restored prestige to the championship, Yuta aims to win back the title he never truly lost. What follows is the most difficult match the player has faced, yet. If the player wins, they are congratulated through on-screen messages and a special version of the credits roll. If the player loses, Yuta claims the belt and the game is over. The player is not given another chance and must start the mode over.
Jin-Yuta is unlocked as a playable character upon the player's victory.
-Reception-
GLPW Ultimate Legends was generally well received by players, with many citing the fast-paced gameplay, distinct characteristics of the wrestlers, crowd reaction and sound design as high points. Criticisms were mainly directed toward the small roster, the inability to create a custom wrestler, and the limited scope of the match types compared to other wrestling games. Another area of contention was the choice to make Jin-Yuta, arguably the promotion's most popular star, locked behind a difficult gameplay requirement. A paid DLC was later offered, which included Hero Yuta, an earlier version of Jin-Yuta's persona, although this too was the subject of some criticism. Hero Yuta is a less powerful character than Jin-Yuta, although is still among the highest-rated wrestlers.
-Jin-Yuta-
The portrayal of Jin-Yuta in the game has been the subject of much debate, with some players accusing the GLPW star of leveraging his position in the company to take a disproportionate amount of creative control over the portrayal of his character in the game. Yuta features heavily in the game, including the intro, where he's seen slowly walking toward the screen, surrounded in shadow, until ultimately performing his Enjeru Knee strike. The game itself is largely centered around the climactic battle with Yuta, and Yuta himself is by far the strongest character in the game, described as unbalanced by many players. Yuta is also featured prominently on the game's cover.
During the fight with Yuta, a special battle theme plays based on Yuta's entrance music, the only time in the game music plays during the match, itself. Using special effects, Yuta is also animated at a higher frame-rate than the other wrestlers in an attempt to give him movements and almost 'mystical' appearance. This is coupled with an effect that leaves a very subtle hint of his form trailing behind as he moves. Yuta also has a special command which allows him to perform his famous Red Lightning Ultra Bomb if both his special meter is full and he's saved 3 signatures. The trait associated with the move is listed as "The End" and indeed, by all accounts, the move is impossible to survive if followed up immediately with a pin.
Some have complained that the game itself appears to be one, big promotion for Jin-Yuta, while others defend it as the understandable choice to heavily features the promotion's biggest star while also honoring the fighting-game trend to an ultimate adversary to fell.
-Notes-
- An alternate version of the gave cover was released by the developer, showing Yuta in his ring gear, with exaggerated, special effects on his lightning arm markings and black sun face paint. This cover was apparently scrapped in favor of a more inclusive version, which features several GLPW wrestlers on the bottom, with a large bust of Yuta looming over them, with his back turned to the viewer, looking over his shoulder. Many fans have clamored for the release of an enhanced version of the game, featuring the originally planned cover art.
- If the player defeats Yuta in Legends Mode, an alternate, similar screen will show here instead, featuring the wrestler they used to win the game. These will be played randomly whenever the game resets to the beginning, depending on how many wrestlers the player has won the game with.
- Former GLPW, now NWF wrestler Zane has said his one regret in the business was leaving GLPW before the game's release.
- Beating the game with Owari allows the player to face Yuta one match earlier, as Owari cannot fight himself for the championship. However, as a trade-off, this version of Yuta is more difficult yet, perhaps due to the real-life storyline of their power struggle for SHINDEN, and also due to the player reaching the final match early.
- It seems enigmatic character Nyra was originally meant to be in the game, as his musical track was found in a datamine of the game's files, thus being the only way this music was released, publicly.
Feels like I should link to his original bio but frankly, that drawing looks pretty dated now so I'm not sure I want to. Besides, you can probably glean from this that he and others consider him to be a pretty big cheese.
