I know I've spent a lot of time ragging on Aonia's CQC capabilities, but she is still a formidable capital ship and these drone ships are why.
This is 170 meters of what is essentially a capital ship railgun with a frigate strapped to it, and is just one of the many that Aonia and her class carry into firefights. Reaction mass is minimal and they have no warp-drive, since it's the carrier's job to provide those things for them.
Think a dozen or more of these flying past and shooting projectiles with enough kinetic energy to punch holes into armored capital ships, while Aonia, ideally, loiters a few hundred megameters away swatting missiles.
Also hey, I think I've got paint scheme and roundel I kinda like for the United Solaris Federation. Art was made using blender to block things out and then a paint over was done in Krita.

I can just picture her wanting to get into the thick of things so she can engage with her railguns, the equivalent of "Let me get closer so I can hit them with my sword!" ;)
Has she ever been in an actual firefight? And what is her relationship to her human Captain? Does she have to follow her orders or can she make her own decisions?
And yes simple and easily identifiable roundel, exactly what you want.
Oh and does she control these drones directly or are they independent once launched?

...Dang, I'm starting to realize I have a bit of a tendency towards that, hit them with my sword, character architype. More the merrier! ;3
"Has she ever been in an actual firefight?"
Yes, though maybe not under Scora's captaincy. Like I said, it is a dangerous universe out there, and they work hard to protect their Arks, colonies, and Solaris from a as yet unnamed gray-goo type threat, among other things.
"And what is her relationship to her human Captain?"
Possibly romantic? I am writing a date episode for them right now to explore what exactly is going on there.
"Does she have to follow her orders or can she make her own decisions?"
She is required to follow her captain's orders, and service type AIs like her would have fairly strong taboos against defying direct orders from captain's and up. Though Scora knows she isn't much of a leader, and allows her to work pretty freely, which is probably one of the things Aonia likes about her. Aonia only has a few things she can't do on her own, engaging targets, and activating her warp drive being the two big ones.
Also yes, simple roundels are definitely best even if it feels almost un-scifi just because it isn't over the top.
"Oh and does she control these drones directly or are they independent once launched?"
She can control them directly just like her avatar. Though they can regulate themselves just fine on their own, and she can give them programs to follow on her own computers or the drones computers. Regardless, they are intended to work as a unit with her, and would not fair well, if they were separated.

heh absolutely ;)
Ah I see, sounds interesting!
"Possibly romantic? I am writing a date episode for them right now to explore what exactly is going on there."
Oh excellent, I look forward to it!
"She is required to follow her captain's orders..."
That makes sense, and it's rare that someone recognises their own limitations so that's a good start. It does raise the question of free-will if an AI is directly blocked from doing certain things even if for understandable reasons.
"She can control them directly just like her avatar."
I see, semi-autonomous then. You've definitely given this setting a lot of thought!

Omfg. I love this. The radiator fins absolutely give the 'fighter plane in space' feel while also being actually useful outside of atmosphere. And the size difference between the drone and the cannon absolutely makes me think of the crew of the Rocinante staying in orbit by using the railgun as a kinetic drive. The kick on that bastard has to be powerful.
