Erta Ale is a shield volcano located in the Afar region of Ethiopia. It consists of an extensive volcano in the Danakil Depression which contains solidified basaltic lava, giving the volcano the black color that makes it stand out in the middle of the desert, in addition, Erta Ale also contains a lava lake that is often active inside its crater, in addition to a extensive river of lava and containing other volcanoes in its structure, but that does not mean that Erta Ale is a complex of volcanoes, but just a shield volcano, considered as the most active volcano in Ethiopia.
