ASCII Tali...
From a recent AIM chat with
eocostello:
M. Mitchell Marmel: Yeah, I used to use Alta Vista back in the day, and Ask Jeeves, and Dogpile.
Eric Costello: 10 miles. Both ways. Uphill. AND WITH DIALUP, DAMNIT!
Eric Costello: I say "CompuServe" to these young punks, these days...
M. Mitchell Marmel: Oh, hell, I used to use FidoNet.
M. Mitchell Marmel: And dialup BBSes.
M. Mitchell Marmel: I used to think 1200 baud was blazing fast, and 9600 an impossible dream.
Eric Costello: And pr0n was centerfolds rendered in ASCII.
M. Mitchell Marmel: Yep.
M. Mitchell Marmel: And weeeee LIKED it!
Eric Costello: Required more imagination.
Eric Costello: Goddamn kids today, with their 8 MB clips.
M. Mitchell Marmel: Heh.
M. Mitchell Marmel: Hmmmmmmmmm...
M. Mitchell Marmel: I oughta see about converting one of Tali's pinups into ASCII.
Eric Costello: This IS old skool, damnit.
M. Mitchell Marmel: Indeed.
Eric Costello: Where the hell's my punchcards...I'll show you something, goddamn kids.
M. Mitchell Marmel: TaliASCII.rtf
M. Mitchell Marmel: There ya go!
Eric Costello: TextEdit works just fine!
Eric Costello: Now, what you need is some cranky rant about FA, and how kids today don't appreciate...
M. Mitchell Marmel: Kids today have it soft with their high speed broadband and their widescreen monitors and their Photoshop. Why, back in the old days, we were lucky to have Thunderscan and ASCII graphics! Et cetera, et cetera.
Eric Costello: In my day, we had to IMAGINE the naughty bits. And hold our head like this. No, like this, not that!
M. Mitchell Marmel: (snicker)
Eric Costello: Photoshop? Feh! We had to manually adjust each character if we wanted to make the tits bigger.
M. Mitchell Marmel: Haw!

I am so totally behind this convo! Good old days!
*giggles*
I still find it amusing to tell my pet/daughter about back when I used a typewriter to hammer out my stories, and when the "BIGGEST FASTEST NEW THING IN OVERNIGHT DOCUMENT SENDING!" as advertised in the paper was a fax machine! Hmmm, now where is my old wind-up phonograph, I feel like listening to some 78rpm bakelite records... oh, wait, I think I have some tape reels left somewhere, I could listen to those instead. If the glowtubes in my audio tower will warm up, that is

They have wax cylinders converted to sound files.
Most of the tunes, speeches, etc are from the turn of the century.
As in 1900!

I actually still have a number of them myself as well. Now if only I can get my gigantic Lenco turntable fixed so I can play them again... And well, there's a good bit of sense in using tube amps. I know from experience that some songs and music just sound so much better when you hear them through a very old device. I have MP3s of songs here that I actually like better when I hear them coming from the original LP record out of the rustly speakers of my old radio/cassette player/turntable which is integrated into an entire piece of furniture I got from my grandmother

*drags out his Packard-Bell Legend I computer with the 12 MHz processing speed, less than a MB of RAM and 40 MB harddrive (PC World's #1 Worst PC of all time).*
Yeah, goddamn kids're into their gigabytes an' high-speed DSLs. Hell, I hadda external modem wi' a friggin' 300 baud speed. We didn't have th' Net, we had BBS's. Yeah, download a half-meg game like "Rogue" or "Kroz" thru a friggin' 300 baud modem. Even better...have a chat wi th' SYSOP of a BBS thru chat and y'see th' text scroll 'cross th' friggin' screen one letter atta time. Kids nowdays got it sucked. Y'all r'member when "Wolfenstein 3-D" wuz considered a godsend. I remember playin' th' original "Wolfenstein" which was akin to the "Berzerk" video game. How 'bout "Begins"? How 'bout "Starflight"?

I have a stereo I bought that converts records, 33's, 45's and 78's to .mp3 files, and then I burn the .mp3 files on to CD's.
I've done 4 projects so far, converting family members' and friends' record collections to CD.
And they all appreciate it a lot.
(Although doing my elderly aunt's collection of Lawrence Welk-type records nearly caused me brain damage.)
And the Fidonet is still around!
I'm a regular in several echoes.
Here's one place to access the Fidonet:
