I love the soft look of the anthro in the corner. The blur and grunge effect is also rather nice. Looks like another good night under the stars for that kitsune.

the contrast is very good, and i'm not focusing on artistic skill on this one cause like you said, the tools need work. two points come to mind, one, the background seems a little unfinished, maybe some trees on the mountains, in a dark green. or take the purple in the sky and expand it into an aurora...
