I find it interesting that your stories can swirl between the realms of same gender and opposite gender pairings. And what's true especially with the husband and wife situation, is that you can work children into the fabric of the allegory, something that is much harder if they were a same gender couple.

Retsuko doesn't mind that her husband didn't bring a gift for their anniversary. She knows that the time spent together is the most precious offering of them all.

Haida is eager to have another child. Perhaps it could be said that Retsuko is the one giving him a gift for their anniversary, by expanding the family and adding another of their kin to their home.
