Weirdly, when I was a linguistics major and first started taking Japanese classes in college (800 years ago or whatever), I can't tell you how many seemingly normal dudes just suddenly would blurt that out.
"You're taking Japanese?? Ching-chong!!!!!1 HA HA HAA!!!!!!"

Yeah it does, but for some reason, like, people who had no real knowledge of Asian stuff would always do that to make fun of Japanese.
I remember one dude I knew from high school once talked to me because he was concerned I might be a Buddhist now, since I was taking Japanese (which was, in his eyes, of course, Satanism lol). That was pretty funny, too.
