Quite sure they were eventhough not openly stating out and besides the covering of close friendship issues on the movie for all audience then on 2005 and ever since as there is always such a big concern about the theme for kids and wider-audiences eventhough that could be managed so well done healthy and safe without a more mature focus on the theme alusion even better than paler open-stated attempts as the Strange World movie of Disney on 2022. The gay subtext undertones on the guys were so well done and even better stated than the Luca movie of 2021 which hold a similar ambiguity on it,
If they're done well as some have been done for sample on The Dragon Prince series of Netflix, and not as Disney tried to do and failed on Strange World, they might do great, but well overall there is a lot of fear on same gender love-showing scenes, even when non sensual or sexually done, on males, whereas on females they're pretty OK, There is a big bias againt them, I have no idea why but indeed it's harder to many people to stand about a male couple in love overall than a female ones and it's somewhat sad and annoying that happens still today.
