Raoul looked up from the hospital bed as the doctor, an officious-looking mink, came into the room. The mustelid was trailed by a wheat-colored canine and a tortoiseshell feline. "How are we today?" the mink asked, glancing at the clipboard in his paw.
"About the same," the hamster grumbled. "Do you have anything for me?"
The mink glanced at his two compatriots.
The golden retriever said, "The, um, lab tests all came back negative."
"All internal scans were clear," the cat said.
The hamster took all this in, and after a moment Raoul asked, "So what do I have?"
The two technicians glanced at each before shrugging in unison. "We don't know," they chorused.
The doctor glared at them momentarily. "That's why we still call it practicing medicine," he said. "We still haven't gotten it right."
