Another original composition that came about while playing randomly on some of my favorite software synthesizers. This synthwave track is inspired by the works of Kevin Montgomery, also known as SelloRekT/LA Dreams, and the works of Giorgio Moroder. SelloRekT/LA Dreams is a top-notch synthwave musician in my opinion.
This track was initially titled "Summer Drive '87" because it originally gave me visions of driving down the highway in the summer of 1987. I changed the name to "The Summer of '87" because I felt it was appropriate for not only highway driving, but also other summer activities, like hitting the beach, playing volleyball, water sliding, chilling out at the pool, windsurfing, and having RC car races with one's friends, just to name a few. In fact, the "1987" part is derived from the fact that my Kyosho Optima Mid (a hobby-grade remote-controlled buggy that I am currently working on) was originally introduced in 1987, so I hope that this track gives you a glimpse of what I have planned for my RC collection. Who knows? I might even feed my pictures of the Optima Mid through a VHS filter for the ultimate 1980s aesthetic.
The "1987" part is also derived from synthesizers and drum machines that were new, still available, or not yet available in 1987. I used software synthesizers that emulate the following:
- Oberheim OB-Xa (originally released in 1981) - spiccato synth strings
- LinnDrum (originally released in 1982) - main rhythm
- E-MU Emulator II (originally released in 1984) - custom rhythm guitar strums and mutes
- Roland JX-8P (originally released in 1985) - sync lead
- Yamaha DX7 II (originally released in 1986) - "BASS.1" preset
- Roland D50 (originally released in 1987) - main melody "Fantasia" and modified "Soundtrack" presets
- Korg M1 (originally released in 1988) - "Choir" preset
