A day's journey west of Silver City, right in the Gila wilderness the steam locomotive belonging to the Santa Fe line chugs its way across the trestles that bridge one side of the Devil's Canyon to the other. Unbeknownst to the engineers and passengers aboard, they have witnesses. Lonesome figures at the gulch of that great ditch look above, taking in that great iron beast, its thumping heart bringing industry deep into the wild frontier on each beat of its brass heart, its swelling lungs chuffing coal smoke high above.
"What do you think she's carrying today?"
A pause, a glint of eyes neath the brim of that worn bolero, quietly watching the mix of passenger and box cars.
"Tomorrow."
Art based on 1885 tintype 'A wonder to the primitive Inhabitants', by Underwood and Underwood.
No the trestles aren't about to explode.
