Varo’s Letter (Aglorand Campaign Supplement)
This is a supplemental backstory / info dump that I made as a way to help me focus Varo into a more fleshed out character; as well as test out some new microphone equipment that I got for a few projects in the pipeline.
(Yes, my voice is rather dorky & I did it all in one take, so do forgive the kind of dumb audio mixing I try to do. Also the thumbnail is the same letter, but put through a Sylvan alphabet / scroll maker to make it be more real to visualize.)

Varo’s letter
(The paper is a bit yellowed, rolled up into a tight scroll with a seal of wax with a rabbit shaped as a star; a symbol of the Drizdal clan. As the scroll is opened, the entire letter is written in Sylvin; the Drizdal’s native tongue, except for a smaller note tucked into the scroll & some sentences with parentheses, where it is written in Celestial, where only Varo & Yllana can fully understand.)
My dearest Yllana,
As the stars align in the sky for each of the constellations, it is late at night with a displacer kitten sitting in my lap in a new land that I write to you; my dearest Wallflower. Writing to you is the only way I could think of to help alleviate the aching hole left behind in this fast beating heart of mine, at this moment in time. But for your sake & the rest of the family, I wanted you to all know that I am alive, well-fed, & exploring the great unknown even as we speak. For all the time we spent apart, the only thoughts that have kept me sane was of you & our family. It’s a moon lit sky tonight as the land I am currently exploring upon is called Aglorand, in the Material Plane; in a town by the ocean known as Marthy. Every night, I could hear the waves crashing along the beaches. The water is calming to these sensitive ears of mine. The stars are shining bright, the kitten; her name is Mire, she’s quite tame & friendly to me, purring as she yawns across the table. Marthy is a town that I have not seen in such a long time; where there are 3 layers of society to walk upon; the upper high class of shops & libraries, the middle residencies & the lower docks where there is plenty of entertainment to behold. While the Material Plane focuses on goods being made for a price rather than by trade, it still has plenty of opportunities for making a living for many walks of life here. It’s been such a wonderful sight & this was just one whole town. Who knows what lies further out into this beyond?
By now, you must have a lot of questions. I don’t blame you ever since I left. After I left, I spent weeks wandering through the forests hidden as I fled Shinaelestra. I knew I couldn’t stay in any known settlement, but I knew one place that hides anyone from any plane: Brokenstone Vale, the settlement of lycanthropes. It was easy to slip through the crowds of many wanderers ever since the portals started showing up in the Feywild from all walks of life. Not to mention that the lycans there were quite friendly, if a little territorial of where I had to go & to not stay too long in one spot. I hunkered down in some ruins where druidic circles gathered as they gave me some of their food to spare. I still held onto your bow even to this day, but even I knew not to fire it anymore. But within this druidic circle lay a tortle; by the name of Raph. I have never met such a kinder soul before in my life within that reptile. He was on his way studying different effects on plants rather than concentrating on the druidic circles he accompanied. Specifically, wolfsbane grew in droves here & potential effects as a booster of sorts or a deterrent. He never gave straight answers, being mostly high on secret stashes. Though he did say that one of his paths that he took would help to seek out answers & a possible solution to my worries. While I tried to offer something in return, he refused stating “I’ll see you again someday, the growth in your eyes would be more than enough for me, my furry friend.” He showed me where to go, calling it “The Beastlands” & said our goodbyes. I traveled for weeks in search of the plane, but no matter where I’d go through, there would always be dangers & always I kept running like a coward. A far cry from my father’s legacy.
But soon I managed to not only find The Beastlands, but also befriended Nobanion, Lord Firemane himself! I’m honestly sad how long I trained under him, for in the Beastlands, time moves slower or faster; or my mind wandered so far that I lost track of time. I have visions of going though smaller planes, but maybe that’s why I lost track of time… Either way, Nobanion had tasked me with a final test of courage. He never told me what I’d find there; nor did I have time to process it before being transported to Marthy. After that, there have been strings of adventures, perils & friends abound that I simply don’t have the time for writing it all down here, less the ink would run out. Let’s just say that this Tumbleweed’s ruffled up quite a few monsters, creatures & higher-ups along the way.
These new friends of mine are like family to me now. All of them. My wallflower, you would just enjoy all the stories these folks can spend weeks just detailing to the kids & to the rest of the clan. Not to mention the many times they saved me as I saved them. There is a strong & deadly red dragonborn, who’s hard dagger-like looks that take any foe down who dares cross his path. While his demeanor tends to conflict with my own, I see him like a brother-in-arms. The second is of a hulking half-orc that uses his rage in the form of divine blue flames & a demeanor of a lost dog who’s found his family. He’s also elected himself as “Captain” of this little troupe of ours, though I doubt that he has what it takes, given his headstrong methods. There are even a couple of elves from the Fey realm! One is a blue skinned moon elf, whose brains are off the charts while her social skills need a lot of work in terms of not being around nobility. She might also have some kind of royal value, so I hope that by getting on her good side, she might be able to help our finances. Also she owns Mire that she tends to lend to me to watch over while she’s doing her own thing. The other elf is a winter eladrin who was cursed / blessed with a giant sea monster that nearly took us all down. He's always been quiet to the others, but I feel a sort of kinship for Fey between us. There have been other friends that have come & gone, such as a strange bubbly candy elemental, a succubus turned angelic being who’s the daughter of a LONG FORGOTTEN BLACKMOOR CAPTAIN & a ratty old ship captain whom I had the pleasure to learn how to cook, thanks to him. I even made him some of the special bread I happened to remember from cooking with the kids, Enra would be so proud! I consider all of them to be family & if we ever meet again, I promise you that they’ll protect you. Though don’t be alarmed if half of them appear shirtless, it’s kind of how they operate…
I’ve also made an effort to create a list of each of our whole family, a “bucket list”, though I’d dare not try to get myself easily killed. What’s the point of having fun if not for a little danger? Still, doing a list makes me feel like I have each of the kids there with me. Some of them I’ve already started to work on. For Enra, our sweet fuzzy cupcake, I’ve started to learn how to properly cook sweets & other baked goods that’ll make even chefs scoff in envy. For Gorzon & Jebb, the warriors of our tribe, I’m learning how to become a better combatant to rival the best knights in the land; maybe even score a title with royal guards. Gallagar, for our bookworm, I’m going out of my way to get special connections for libraries to study towards learning about the world at large. I’ve already made myself known to a library within Marthy, so with enough time, he could even become a student of said masters inside. Olon, our scouting chipmunk, I’m collecting many rare trinkets that they would observe & examine towards plant & beast based life. Finally, Ibborha & Yllana, I’ve found a potential new home thanks to Raph, that we could potentially set up a new farm based business, thanks to his years of cultivating gardens around the home. Not to mention that if we show our services well, it could lead to us expanding the home to truly hold everyone for a long time there.
The night I write to you is also an important holiday, it seems to Algorand. One of celebration of fondly remembered family & those closest to you in prayers of mourning, but of remembering the fun times as well. Sadly, I never had the time to enjoy it properly as I passed out after a couple of drinks. Trust me, Wallflower, your husband still has no tolerance for the hard stuff. Compared to your warrior past, you’d easily beat everyone by a landslide! The day certainly was a fun time with my new crew, but no matter what: I will always have the eyes & ears for you. Your Tumbleweed will still have to keep on traveling, but I hope that when you do come over to this side of the Astral Sea, it’d start here in Marthy. I love you all so very much & by the light of Nobanion & of the celestials above; they’ll get me home soon.
Forever your wandering Tumbleweed,
Varo Drizdal
(P.S. Yllana, this is only for you. I’m writing this the night I met the water nymph who’ll deliver this letter to you. Something has been brewing on this side of the Astral Sea & I fear that the worst is yet to come. The reason why Raph lent me his home is partially the problem I’ve been seeing more. Strange extraplanar creatures that take over host bodies have been cropping up the past few weeks, encountered a few with myself & my crew. Almost got taken over by said creatures. They also killed Raph & left quite a nasty surprise as I slept on his body parts strewn on the floor & bed. Makes me shutter just thinking about it. There have also been reports of the Material Plane’s army, the Anvil, roaming the countryside blaming Feyfolk for their misdeeds, taking them away towards prison islands. I can already tell that this is not true. Someone is manipulating with forces beyond their comprehension. Left a really bad dream of impending doom that forever burned into my memory. While there have been a few theories, I still have yet to figure this out. For now, keep whatever you can to not come to the Material Plane at this time. Or if you do find yourselves traveling in Marthy, head towards The Red Shell, past a big church on the lower side. [Also, DO NOT go to that church with any of the kids, no matter what] Ask the Kenku servants inside or the bouncer out front to meet with Ember or Noxus, they are the daughter & father of the Blackmoor Ranger I told earlier. Trust me, he is. It’s a long story why they look like that. Tell them that The Forester had sent you & the kids, they’ll know where to keep you safe within the city. Also, I’m not entirely sure if the Blackmoor Rangers are looking out for me ever since that night; but I’m hoping that at least they announced it as KIA. But if not… I just hope I can resolve it peacefully. Whatever happens, I’ll always love you. In this life & possibly the next, if I’m not careful. We must keep hopping forward, no matter the danger. Whatever you do, don’t do anything reckless. Leave that to your Tumbleweed to distract any dangers away.)
