Eyes of Tomorrow
Today is December 4th, the International Cheetah Day. The day when most of us go to work, meet friends, comment on facebook, etc. like every other day, without having an idea this is in any way a special day. This day some of us take the time to celebrate the world's fastest land animal with their art. How many of us though realize we might not have it anymore on our planet tomorrow?
There's only about 10-12 thousand cheetahs in the wilderness worldwide. They are being hunted, their prey is disappearing, their natural habitat is shrinking.... and because, thanks to us, humans, their numbers were reduced to merely 2 thousands by 1990, extremely low genetic diversity has left them with crippled capabilities to cope with all that we keep putting on them. All cheetahs that now live on our planet are as close as twins. Only 1 of 10 cubs survives to the age of 3 months. In other words, this little buddy staring at you from my drawing has only 10% chance of survival in its natural environment. These eyes may be gone tomorrow. Think about it.
Today is December 4th, the Day when we care about Cheetahs.
But tomorrow is December 5th, and they will still want to live.
