Foundin the Balloon Otter Pirates
Rayleigh was born and raised on the Island of Dragons and joined in the Dragon Trials with Vincent, both passed admirably amd were permitted to leave the island, Rayleigh decided to stick around and do some fishing while he plots his future.
Tragedy struck him as some Dragon Nobles demolished his house in order to expand the Dragon Palace.
Outraged, he stole one of their houseboats and took to the seas armed only with his devil pamp. During his stay on a small island, he encountered a Floatzel in a straw hat named Jacob D. Arthur, who was thrilled at the sight of his ship and asked ifnhe wanted to turn the world upside, Rayleigh mocked him, but also found it fun, and ended up becoming the Vice Captain of their small pirate crew.
Balloon Otter Pirates
They became quite a duo and even attracted some other names such as a Decidueye named 43 whom was very skilled in Swordsmanship and Archery, they also took in several new rookies such as Seth, Tai, Cliff, and Kroko. Of course Rayleigh mocked the new rookies and he challenged them to swordplay and won very easily.
As years went on, the Balloon Otter Pirates became a big name and even becoming famous as Jacob found so many riches and treasure he dubbed the One Pamp and hid it in a secret Island somewhere in the world only he knows after conquering the ocean, only Jacob, Rayleigh and 43 knows where it's hidden as Jacob joyfully laughed at wondering who would become the new pirate king.
Demise of the Crew
Tragedy struck the crew again as Kroko formed his own pirate crew called the Dark Gator Pirates and despite his strength, Kroko won and took out everyone, demanding where the One Pamp was as he already took over Siwa.
Rayleigh refused and Kroko knew he was a devil pamp wearer, knocked him unto the ocean to sink.
Rayleigh awoke several weeks later on a remote ice island, he found out his entire crew was wiped out, and he only had the Balloon Otter flag left with him. He would've gone after Kroko, but decided against it a wouldn't be able to defeat him since Kroko gained so much power and felt bummed that Kroko also took out the other Pirates, leaving hum as the sole survivor, so he decided to go into retirement as a pirate.
Life after Piracy
Rayleigh eventually became a nomad and a thrillseeker, amd seeing the island he was on was uncharted, he decided to Mae the island his, but he did find a wounded Articuno named Sal and nursed him back to health. The two eventually became friends, Sal let him ride on his back since he couldn't swim.
He traveled around the islands for several years and even married a Feraligatr whom was a pirate herself named Shaki, she was a former Dark Gator Pirate, but eventually left the crew after Kroko took things too far. After leaving, she joined a friend of hers and opened The Shellstack Tavern, two eventually got married as both were pirates who were victims of Kroko. He did also develop some bad habits such as looting and gambling. She also never told him that he basically became a legendary pirate as he was the survivor of the late Pirate King Jacob.
Rayleigh eventually ran into a fellow pirate who told him that Jacob had several kids and was hoping to someday meet them and see if they would be worthy of becoming the pirate King.
Several years went by and Rayleigh was eating at the Shellstack Tavern and much to his surprise, he encountered Edward, Jacob's youngest son, recognizable with the straw hat.
The Strawcats were shocked when they found out he was 'The Dragon of Decay' Rayleigh who served on the Balloon Otter Pirate ship as the vice captain. He though highly of Edward, seeing a lot of his father in him and hopes to see him achieve greatness. He offered to tell them where Jacob's treasure was, but Edwars forcibly declined a she'd rather quit being a Pirate as there'd be no fun in knowing.
He did feel that Edward was destined to do great things and offered to train him should he want to.
During his travels, he also encountered Jacob's daughter Isabelle and Was nappy to see she inherited some of Jacob's energy and even forming her own Pirate crew she dubbed the New Balloon Otter Pirates, Rayleigh have a hardy laugh as she had a bug name to fulfill, but she loves a challenge and admire how local her crew was as they wanted to avenge her father.
He trained her in Armament and Observation Haki along with new combat to help her in the upcoming battles ahead of her.
Siwa War
Rayleigh traveled alot and saw how badly injured Edward and Isabelle was and took both to the Air Continent for medical aid by Doctor Deliah Leif who nursed them back to full strength. Rayleigh them they'll have to be way stronger than usual for the upcoming Kroko war and offered to train them both on combat and Haki to be prepped
They happily accepted, but Deliah demanded they fully recover first. He told them to come to Blizzard Island to train them. He trained both of them for several years and their strength and Haki improved by a lot, almost rivaling his.
Isabelle requested if she can train alone for awhile which he allowed while continuing to train Edward in Conquerers Haki.
Several years passed and Edward was ready to aid in the war, so he decided to treat him to one last dinner at the shellstack tavern. As Edward got on his ship, he turned back to Rayleigh vowing to avenge the Balloon Otters on his behalf amd will become the king of the Pirates.
Rayleigh told gum to never stop chasing his dream and he'll be waiting.
Both Rayleigh and Shaki saw him off, shedding tears at how far Jacob's daughter and son has come, telling her that strawman found the right pokemon, even stating he'll hang around a bit longer to see the next pirate king.
Post Siwa War
Rayleigh saw in the newspaper that the kingdoms had won and Kroko lost. Knowing there would be great food and drinks, hebdecided to join in the celebration, Edward and Isabelle even wanting a celebratory challenge.
Despite their efforts, theu lost and Rayleigh told them he trains daily and that they still had several years if they ever want to topple him.
Edward and Isabelle decided they'd train hard and when one of them becomes the next pirate King, they want to challenge him. Seeing a lot of his late captain in then he proudly told them he'd wait as he wants to battle the new pirate king.
