The sun shone through the blanket of clouds. It was a pleasant day for a dragon, the rays of the sun that pierced the clouds warmed Michael's red and colorful scales while a calm yet gentle breeze kept him from overheating.
The day had brought with it a sense of adventure and exploration. Michael had just successfully finished his spelunking endeavor of plundering a cave of riches, a shiny iridescent gem and a fist full of gold.
Michael inhales deeply before letting out a breath, feeling the warmth of the sun against his face, "it is not often you have a pleasantly nice day like this. This would be the perfect addition to my collection," Michael happily chirped as he fiddled the gem within his grasp, "it is nice and colorful, just like me. I guess this was a fun little endeavor. It does feel nice going out and exploring." There was a brief pause before Michael continued tapping his chin, "but I think it would be nice to just take a walk around the local village, maybe a little sightseeing? Michael tapped his chin, nodding in agreement, “might as well take advantage of the pleasant weather while it lasts. I heard that there is a village not too far from here, I have some time to spare and it is within walking distance.”
It was only a few kilometers along a gravel path before it transitioned into a cobblestone road, Michael could finally spot the familiar shape of buildings and construction. But the glint of something reflected light into Michael’s eye. Backstepping, Michael glazed down and spotted a silver penny wedged and nestled between the cut stones of the cobbled road.
The penny was easily pulled free as Michael pinched it between his fingers, flipping it over as he examined it. “That is odd…” Michael found himself murmuring to himself, "it looks like a normal silver penny?” Laying the penny flat in his palm, Michael gently raised and lowered his hand. “It is hard to describe,” Michael tilted his head to the side in confusion, “it is very heavy for being such a little thing. I will probably look at this more when I add it to my den.”
Despite the confusion around the puzzling penny, the dragon continued along their way into the village, feeling the cold cobblestones under their feet. Despite walking along the outskirts, the village was deceptively larger than Michael was originally led to believe. Many of the buildings were closely packed together and many were undergoing renovations to have a more modern look. There was quite the variety of creatures and races going about their business, humans and beast alike, Michael even saw what looked like a shark wearing a white shirt sitting at a bench sipping tea in the shade and enjoying tasty looking sweats. There was an open area resembling a park, after taking in the sights, Michael got a bit of a freight when something crinkled under him. Lifting his leg revealed a weathered piece of parchment adhering to the sole of his clawed foot. Pulling at the parchment, Michael eventually separated the parchment from his sole. Before tossing the parchment away, Michael caught a glance of what was printed on it and realized that it was a damp flier. Albeit mostly warped with certain parts illegible, the flier depicted only a few faded colors.
(_Help Wanted_
-In need of… volunteers to assist in an experiment… Fair compensation.)
Shrugging, Michael glanced up at the sky, unsure what to think, “it probably would not hurt to just drop by and check, I have a little time to spare. Plus there is the promise of coin…” Michael added smiling to himself sheepishly, “I can not say no to helping someone.”
It was not hard to find the location described on the flier, Michael watched as the sun began to set, casting a dark blanket over the horizon. The building looked to be a cozy alchemist’s study, a little old, yet to undergo any renovations like many of the other buildings that surrounded it.
“This looks like the right place,” glancing up and down the street, Michael scratched his head. There was no one around that seemed to be the individual that posted the flier, and the front door was securely fastened and locked. “I guess I might be out of luck…” Michael’s voice was cut short when he felt something tap on his shoulder.
Michael turned only to come face to face with a reptilian lizard man. The lizard held a leather satchel strung over their shoulder, thick scales covering a majority of their body and running down the length of their tail. A lanyard hanging from their neck prominently revealed that their name was Long, they casually pulled out a key and unlocked the door to the building before staring at Michael and with a puzzled look on their face.
“Um…” Michael stammered before holding the parchment up for Long to see, “are you the one from this flier?”
Long nodded gently, a little curious and surprised at the fact that a dragon was now standing before them. Opening the door, Long motioned with one hand for the dragon to follow a friendly smile faintly visible on their face, an invitation to come inside.
Michael was unsure what to think of Long, the lizard man did not utter a word and only left him confused as to what the experiment could possibly be…
The interior of the building was comfy and inviting, Long waved a hand towards a couch with a coffee table positioned in front. Michael glanced at the different contractions and oddities methodically spread out on countertops and within displays. Taking a seat upon the couch, Michael could see the cloud of dust fly into the air around him, giving the impression that it had been a long time since the couch had supported someone. The lizard man disappeared around a corner briefly for a time before returning; a small tray with two steaming beverages clapped within their hands. Once again, without a word, Long simply held out one cup to Michael, as if wanting him to take it.
"Oh?" Michael grasped the steaming beverage, "thank you." The familiar smell of fresh herbal tea quickly fills the dragon's nostrils as he lifts the cup for a sip. Getting a better look around the room, Michael took notice and was intrigued and fascinated by the various contraptions and devices positioned on countertops and within displays. Of the strange oddities, Michael did recognize the familiar design of a rotating centrifuge, a metallic liquid condensed at the bottom of most of the ampules. "So…" Michael exhaled as he returned his gaze to the lizard man that stood before him, "what exactly are you needing help with?"
Long reached into their satchel, pulling out a small cloth bag before emptying its contents onto the table. A fist full of metallic coins clanged against the table…
"Coins?" Michael raised an eyebrow. It seemed a little early for payment.
Long gently shook their head as they scribbled on a piece of parchment and held it up for Michael to see.
(False coin, condensed dormant slime, living metal.)
Dawning a set of gloves, Long picked up a few of the coins and used a small spray of mist on the coins in his hands. A few seconds later and the coins began to melt and ooze, taking on the consistency of a gooey liquid.
"Oh," Michael was both surprised and fascinated, "that looks so cool!"
Long held up a finger, as if Michael had not seen anything yet. The lizard squeezed and stretched the metal before spraying again with the mist. Almost immediately, Michael could see the metal stop moving as Long dropped the metal and it clanged on the table clearly changed back to a solid but remaining in the shape of a rod. Long pointed at Michael and then at the metal rod as if wanting him to pick it up.
Tentatively, Michael picked up the rod and was surprised at how deceptively weightless it felt. The rod was crude in shape with many sections thicker than others, but it still felt surprisingly firm albeit slightly malleable. As the dragon fiddled with the metal rod, Long scribbled another note on parchment before holding it up in Michael's direction.
(Is back to being dormant, will stay in shape. Is dangerous only when awake.)
"I see… What are you wanting to use this for and why am I here?" Michael finally asked the question that had been flooding within his mind.
Long pulled a leather bound book from their satchel opening to a page with loose notes and laying it out in front of Michael. The dragon glanced at what appeared to be diagrams and schematics. From the looks of it, Long planned to utilize this strange metallic slime to aid in building and construction. Amongst the drawings, there was a person depicted molding a shape out of a surprisingly large amount of slime. Once Michael was done analyzing, Long gently packed everything away, with the exception of a single note…
The dragon swallowed before continuing, "may I ask, what were your past experiments?" Michael did not expect a verbal response, but still thought to press further into conversation.
The lizard glanced at Michael, a sorry look in their eyes as they slowly slid the note over to the dragon to see.
There was an illustration of what looked to be a minotaur flexing with an annotation; Tiny…
Long pointed at the drawing then tapped the metallic slime rod.
"W-wait…" Michael stammered trying to comprehend what Long was trying to communicate, "this metal goo is him!"
Long let out a sigh as they scribbled on another piece of parchment…
(Yes, slime will absorb and devour almost any organic material to create more of itself. This includes even you and I… Tiny was overconfident, loud, and did not heed my warnings, he was gone in a matter of seconds before I even realized what had happened.)
Flipping the parchment over, Long continued to scribble.
(But I will not make the same mistake again. You do not have to worry…)
Michael made an audible gulping sound as he nodded his head gently, he still could not wrap his head around the fact that a mighty minotaur had been reduced into nothing but gooey metal…
Eventually the time came, and Long invited Michael to follow. Around a corner, Long led the dragon into an isolated room. The walls were reinforced and looked watertight with a kind of plaster. There was a glass observation chamber off to the side.
Long snapped their fingers to get Michael's attention, placing a spray in the dragon's claws before pointing downward to the center of the room.
"Alright, I think I understand," Michael spoke as he obediently walked to the center while Long latched and sealed the door before appearing behind the glass of the observation chamber. The dragon was alone in the room, only with only the strange spray that was given to him…
Long motioned and mimicked spraying with their mouth, as if wanting the dragon to use the spray. Michael followed the instructions, spraying the mist over his arms before following up with the head, chest, legs, and tail. The mist, strangely enough, only felt like ordinary water. But as the dragon finished with his coating, he noticed a surprised stare from the lizard, as if something was wrong…
"Hey, what is with that look… Huh?" Michael felt something funny at his hip. Michael glanced down and quickly realized that a section of his waist had a familiar looking liquid metal oozing around it while driving and flowing down the dragon's legs. "What is going on?" Michael demanded. "I did not see… oh," Michael paused for a moment, remembering the strange silver penny he had picked up earlier that day.
As the slime threatened to flow up down Michael's leg, the dragon could feel the slime running against and underneath his scales, almost in a tickling way. The dragon attempted to wipe the slime off of himself, but instead, his claws simply sank deeply into his leg, revealing that the slime was already changing the dragon's body into metallic slime. Despite the danger Long had warned Michael about, the dragon felt a growing sense of relaxation and pleasure. It was not painful, the dragon actually found the thought of melting into slime strangely comforting. The slime proceeds to spread, forming on Michael's tail and even one of his wings, feeling the slime weighing the dragon down. As the slime flowed up and around Michael's face, the dragon groaned in pleasure as the slime coated his eyes and oozed into his mouth, eventually even the dragon's teeth and tongue were turned into the metallic slime.
The sensation Michael felt was beyond description. The dragon felt nothing as he opened his eyes seeing his reflective gooey body. The dragon's feet were fused to the ground as slime flowed every direction around his body, he attempted to take a step but his legs remained stiffly rooted to the ground. "Hey," Michael heard his own voice reverberate around his body as he spoke, "I could use a little help here." Michael glanced and realized that Long had already unlatched the door and was stepping inside with a device reminiscent of an extinguisher.
Although hesitant, Long carefully aimed the device downward and sprayed a thick mist at Michael's fused feet. Immediately Michael could free his legs as he takes a few steps examining himself, happily sticking his tongue with a playful expression.
"This feels amazing," Michael turned to face Long, "thank you!" The lizard stared at their reflection against the dragon's reflective metallic body.
Long pulled free another piece of parchment and hastily scribbled a note, carefully keeping a good arm's length out of reach.
(This was not the intended experiment… I did not realize you had one of my condensed slimes with you. But I have to say that I am pleased with the results.)
Using a wooden poker, Long tapped Michael under the arm and watched as slime separated from the dragon’s gooey body and dripped from the tip of the poker. Long jotted down notes as Michael extended a hand in an invitation to shake. Long accepted the handshake with the gooey dragon as the lizard’s claws sank into Michael’s slimy grasp.
Michael now considered Long a trustful friend that had no ill intentions. As the gooey dragon walked out, leaving an oozing trail of slime in his wake, Long motioned for Michael to open his hand. The dragon obediently followed and a fist full of the condensed slime coins fell into his grasp, but they immediately lost shape and fused into the dragon’s palm, becoming a part of his mass. “Fair well!” Michael called out as he waved departing.
Long waved back in response but realized that his hand was now shiny and reflective while something also dripped down his arm…
