Today is Thomas Edison's birthday. And since I'm an asshole I'll celebrate it with a picture of Nikola Tesla!
They were both geniuses. Edison was definitely the best businessman and Tesla the pure inventor. But when they became rivals, Edison used all kind of dirty tricks to discredit Tesla, going as far as staging electrocutions of stray dogs, horses and even an elephant to scare the public against alternating current.
Finally, Tesla's system triumphed. Today we use his current in every house and carry his little brainchild under the hood of every car.
Happy birthday, Edison. You were a great visionary... but the day you failed to recognize this guy's talent your proverbial light bulb went dim.

Apparently there's an aluminum refinery in South Africa that's powered by MASSIVE direct current from a neighboring nation. The positive and negative charges are sent over cables separated by about half a mile, yet they still bend in towards each other between the towers, and they sometimes find charred remains of cows in the middle.
So yeah, AC for me, please.

The story of Tesla vs. Edison as told be an inebriated historian:
