The First Sphere has always safeguarded the status quo to ensure that society functions even as it is constantly pushed on the brink of collapse by the constant threat of monster attack while other guilds vie for power against each other while holding back the darkness (or even guiding it along for themselves). Inky is just one of many agents that keep the peace, but he's not above playing with the others.
