Those who wield great power must know when to stay their hand.
Disaster is unfolding in a world among the clouds populated by dragons, and some of its residents have embarked on a journey to confront it. Yet they have an unusual source of assistance: an extraplanar traveler aiding their efforts.
To avoid discovery, she must blend in among them. Come what may, she must not do anything that compromises her disguise... even when it puts her companions in jeopardy.
Are the lives of friends a price worth paying in pursuit of a goal, however noble it may be?
Here it is. 105,324 words. My magnum opus.
The Planeswalker: Between Skies is a high-fantasy adventure story. It is the culmination of everything I have learned as a writer to date: believable characters with great depth to them, a setting to draw the reader into, a high stakes adventure, and emotional moments between the cast. You can get it in PDF format here but it's also available in DOCX, EPUB (ebook), and AZW3 (Amazon e-reader) formats on the microsite I created, linked above.
I would like to give a very special and heartfelt thanks to
binarian who proofread the story for me. In addition to catching a variety of typos and errors, she had excellent suggestions for improving the parts I was uncertain about, and helped me to make this story the best it could possibly be.
It's hard to believe that I started writing this in January and completed the first draft barely a month and a half later. When inspiration hits, it hits hard. Everything since then has been editing, refining, and improving - the original word count was about half of the final one. The increase came from additions I thought of while doing the first draft, fixing contradictions, fleshing out previously glossed-over sections, developing the characters further, and so on. But I have finished my final editing pass with only minor changes to make in a few places, so it is ready to be called complete.
I'm nervous about publishing it. I've truly poured my heart into it, more than anything else I've ever written. From the beginning I deliberately selected elements that were self-indulgent: everyone is some flavor of dragon, the setting and theme is one I find personally interesting as a premise, and the overall tone and plot of the story is exactly the kind of thing that I would like to read from other authors. Putting this book out into the world makes me feel vulnerable. But I learned a great deal from writing it, primarily that I shouldn't be ashamed of who I am or what I have created. To the bitter end, I never gave up on my overall vision for the story, even if specific details and bits of the book changed drastically along the way: I merely changed the way in which certain details were presented or revealed to do so in a better manner, and removed or reworked parts that weren't contributing anything to the story.
To anyone who does read this story, thank you. Thank you very much. I hope you enjoy it. If you do (or even if you don't so long as you can be polite about it), please let me know, either by contacting me or simply leaving a comment. And I would be extremely grateful if you could spread the word and link it to others who might be interested. Realistically, I do not expect more than a couple hundred readers at the very most...
...but I am proud of this story. It makes me happy. I gave it everything I had, and I greatly enjoy going back and re-reading certain parts of it for the emotions it can evoke, the characters in it, and its messages. Even if everyone forgets about it within a couple of months and it falls into total obscurity, it will always hold a special place in my heart. And nothing can take that away from me.
Even if I write another book, be it in a new setting or a continuation of this one, it is unlikely it will have as much personal meaning to me as this one does. This truly is my best work.
All characters, the story, and the setting belong to me.
