The Alolan variant is based on the Japanese white eye warbler, which is a Japanese bird that was originally introduced to Hawaii to control the local insect population but has since become an invasive species (hence the Dark typing). It also follows the trend of invasive species and Kanto Pokemon getting Dark-type variants in Alola (like the Rattata, Meowth and Grimer lines)
