I learned that after having to call a locksmith, 189 bux to open an 84 mercedes 300sd. Could not jimmy those doors, or coat hanger them. An the worst part. I had just closed the door at the facility to pick up my spare key. Which My wallet was inside the car, and the ripoffs did not even let me use the spare to open the car. All because I didnt have the money up front to pay them for the key. Needless to say. I didnt buy the key from them and went elsewhere. Least elsewhere, the key was half the price.
I moreso was talking about opening the door. I have not seen a single car, new or old, require the chip to unlock the doors. Hell my original key's shell broke, so I took the the transponder out, got a new key cut for $20 and threw it in there, then glued the old key back together so I could leave all my stuff locked in the car at the beach and not have to worry about the water damaging the key.
As someone who has never done this, nor owned any vehicle in which it is possible to lock the car without the key in hand, nor known anybody who has managed this trick... I suspect this trope is far more common in fiction than reality. Good chapter ender though.
