The biggest problem I have is those level 30s coming around to kick my ass. I wasn't there when my brother's friend made the character,so I don't know if it's a PvP server or what. But yeah, they like to use the open missions as a choke point. They got this one area where the bad guy NPCs (who are friendly to them) are stronger than the good guy NPCs (who are on your side) and use it to kill you over and over. I can't imagine it's any better on the villain side.
Additionally, you start with 2 power sets, one weapon and one super power. You can get any power set you want, but they're all pretty much the same thing,so you end up with a lot of repeat powers if you decide to get a bunch of other power sets.
Personally,I find the Champions On-Line system better for character customization if you go for the gold membership (pay per month). Better character modeler too. And you get it free if you're willing to work with the archetype system. So try it out. Also,I dig the cel shading effect if you put the graphics on high. Nice thing about Champions,PvP is optional. It's still unfair, unbalanced, and cheap, but it's optional so you don't have to deal with it if you don't want to. Also, slotting for constitution (HP) and recovery (starting energy) is a good idea.
DC does have one thing in it's favor and that's that it feels more like a brawler than a RPG. But it's still an RPG,just more cleverly disguised. And,of course, the DC characters. Kevin Poe is just not in the same marketing league as the Joker as voiced by Mark Hamill.
To be honest, tho,I'd rather see something along the lines of Freedom Force for power customization. But you can't have everything,I guess.

I hate PvP and if you were dying a lot in DCU from other players, you were on a PvP server instead of a PvE one. I think DCU has a lot of potential, but it is still a fresh newborn game, it has to mature a bit before it can reach its full potential. Remember, Champions Online used to suck (I played the Beta and early release) and it took them a while before they hammered out the bugs.
Actually, most of it is pretty dated. Bugs I don't mind since those usually get squashed, but the whole system is pretty old. They ripped off a bunch of Cryptic's ideas but it comes together pretty clunky. Like the open missions. Why would you allow PvP between a level 30 and a level 10 even on a PvP server? It's pretty much a given who's going to win unless,of course, the 30 just stands there and lets the 10 go to town on him. There's letting people roleplay and there's just being annoying. It makes the whole thing more of a grind. And the stun locks. Why in the name of god do these fucking games insist on making stun locks? A stun is annoying. A PACK of stuns is just unfair. You're basically saying you HAVE to build this way or you're gonna get murdered.
Personally,I don't think Champions changed that much. Some of the missions are more interesting and the story lines got better, some small changes here and there. But on the whole,it's still the same game. I still don't know why they didn't just use the Champions power building system. They're already halfway there letting you choose animations and colors. Why not go all the way and make it where you can define the powers themselves?

The game is still fresh and new, so it has a lot of developing to do. There are a lot of flaws, but overall I have fun playing it. I know that DC Universe is trying to make it original and not ripoff Champions or City of Heroes (because of the lawsuit that they won, it could very easily come back and bite them in the ass). So this way, they just listen to what the fans want and work it from there. If the fans suggest an idea and they like it, they can use it without many legal issues. Anyway, I am too tired to put up much of an argument, so, to each his own.
Well, that's pretty much the problem, isn't it. It's been released. Millions of dollars of investment, months,if not years,of development, mountains of reference material, ideas, and play mechanics, and it's still not ready. This isn't anyone's first rodeo. MMOs have been around forever. Why do they STILL need "time to mature"? Why do they still need to go over the same old ground every other MMO goes over? They rip off some of Cryptic's work, but don't have fucking sense to sit down and understand problems that have plagued games for a long time now? Once you steal from other games,it proves you KNOW of these other games. So there's a lot less excuse to continue to produce a sub par game. And where is it going to go? The same damn places all the other MMOs went. So why wait for this one to come up to speed when I have other games that can disappoint me right now? I'm tired of waiting for them to figure it out and it's still not very fun or interesting.
As I said, bugs are forgivable,a lousy, under designed game in this day and age is not. There's no "new ground" to explore. It's all established,it's just not used. Hopefully, tho, they'll keep the model editor for their next shooter. And at least Champions is free.

The main reason that games need time to mature is because, how much fun would it be if they released EVERYTHING that the game is capable of at the release? I have played games like that and sadly, they never last long. They want the base game released so that if more people want more of what is already part of the base game files, they can release it and make it work. If they have to patch the game so much that the original data on the disk is useless, then the company has wasted a lot of money. Look at FFXIV, the game has bombed so hard that they are going to entirely redesign the game and re-release it. None of the original data on the disks is usable (save for "maybe" the character designs).
Yes, MMO's have been around for what seems like forever. But you also have to remember that whenever a company tries to improve a game, it can bomb hard. EverQuest II was terrible at release. Phantasy Star Universe sucks, still, and has no way to improve gameplay. Phantasy Star Online was a great game, they took everything that was great about it and stripped it from PSU. Companies are learning about MMO's because they are no longer a phaze. It no longer targets a specific group of people. So, technically, there is "new ground" to explore. Can you imagine a sports MMO where people train online to make their players better, but not for one sport, all of them? It is coming, maybe not right away, but eventually.
And yeah, Champions is free, now. It was not always free, they are doing this because they are afraid that people are going to want to play a game that has all the licensing of their favorite super heroes and not play theirs. If they make it free to play, and only charge for "special" items and areas, maybe they can keep some of the people.

First off,you can't release everything a game is capable of at release anyway because companies don't even know what the software is capable off. Modders are working on an FPS game mode on Starcraft 2. TF2 didn't come with a race mode,it was made by players. Looking at UT1 and that DBZ based game and you'd never know they were the same engine. The same engine that made the fail of UT3 also made the win of Batman:AA. So this point is moot. Game's can be bent to do most anything if you're willing to work with it long enough.
So you're telling me,companies with talented programmers, lots of cash, and access to the source code can't do what a handful of hackers working in their basements only on the weekends can do? Somehow I don't buy that. And there may be a sports MMO someday, but if it's anything like the games now,it's still gonna suck.
Actually, they're trying out the whole "micropayments" idea. City of Heroes is still pay per month only. But then,CoH has a lot more content going for it. Unfortunately, they still cling to the outdated "archetype" play scheme. It's ok for a free game, not so much something you'd want to pay for.

Generally speaking, no. Companies can not do what the hackers do. The hackers quite often have better ideas than the programmers. My favorite mod that has ever been created was the "Duct Tape" mod for Doom 3. Which allowed you to use your flashlight and gun at the same time. Something that simpler should have been thought of by the developers, but wasn't.
Here is another example, FFXI has Rank 15 already in the game files. But you can only get to Rank 10. Why wouldn't they release it? It also has a ton of skins, zones, spells, animations and other data that is just sitting there, not being used. And 80% of that stuff has been there since the release of the game almost 10 years ago. Just because a company has talented people that can do stuff, does not, by any means, mean that a single person can not single handedly do a better job than an entire company. Want proof? Look up the videos Haloid and Kaze Ghost Warrior. Both were done by a single individual, with some occasional help from friends. And there was no huge company backing them, they did it with store bought computers/programs and in their spare time, in LESS time than it takes these companies to do stuff.
There are plenty of games out there that do NOT need a huge company behind them to be successful. The problem with these companies is that they are not listening to the fans, they are just doing what is easiest to design and program and telling the fans that this is what they want. You are getting sucked into the whole "we have millions of dollars and the smartest people hired here, of course we are giving you the best for your money" bullshit. Do a little research, and you can see that any hacker/programmer out there who does what they do could walk circles around these companies. Because they actually play the game, talk to friends and base their ideas off off what people ACTUALLY want. It truly is an amazing concept.

You missed the point. It's not a matter of "can't",it's a matter of "won't" with these companies. Everyone who played Doom 3,with rare exception,HATED the "flashlight or gun" mechanic. They said so many times on the company's forums. The only way they couldn't have been aware of the problem is if they didn't bother to read their own forums. Which, while plausible, isn't a very good idea. Companies *could* do all that stuff, they just *don't* because they chose not to.
As for FFXI,that stuff could just be old data they couldn't be assed to remove from the data files. Rank 15 stuff might be "boss only" powers. There's tons of unused data in most MMOs. Heck,if you look in the data for Fallout New Vegas, there's a bunch of data in there left over from Fallout 3. It's what we like to call "laziness". And it's the reason DC On-Line's going to continue to suck. Sad,really.
So,do you need a huge company to be successful? No. Should huge companies be better at their jobs than they are? Of course. Talent or not,any idiot should be able to slap together a decent game with a little knowledge and some gaming experience. But they don't. Why? Don't want to. And that's the reason games suck today.

Right, that is why most games suck today. The original point I was trying to make though is that even if DCU is dated, the game is fun and retains a bit of entertainment value. I hate that in World of Warcraft, the only way to level up is to do missions/quests. Grinding is sufficiently inefficient and yet that is the same thing you do in DCU and it holds my interest better than WoW. Maybe it is because it is because of the comic book characters, maybe there is a different element in there somewhere. All I know is that I like DCU and so does Mike.
Mot playing it constantly, it took me about 2 weeks. Actual days playing, probably about 4-5. Doing missions is how you level, killing baddies does not really get you squat for exp. Personally, I would hold off on buying the game until they raise the cap and add more content. I wish I had known the cap was so low, I would not have gotten it so quickly.
