The South Shore Line runs Chicago to South Bend, Indiana (my birthplace!) and has operated since the 1910s. Running on a mainline railroad, down the middle of streets, next to a freeway; through the very centre of Chicago, in a sprawling industrial wasteland, by small towns, forest, rural farmlands and even through a National Park, the South Shore Line is the very last traditional electric interurban railroad in North America- a strange survivor of what were once hundreds of systems with thousands of miles of track all across the country, but which eventually succumbed to buses, freeways, and America's car culture. The South Shore managed to hang on all those years, and today is a very successful, busy line serving both city commuters and intercity passengers alike. Here, an eastbound train squeezes down the middle of 11th Street in Michigan City, Indiana on a damp February afternoon. Drivers here are used to the train in the middle of the street, and accidents are actually rare.

It's heavy rail, technically, but street-running is part of what makes it an interurban, specifically. Cities that build "light rail" lines are basically reviving the interurban idea.

Toronto's old Long Branch streetcar route (number 507) was considered an interurban when it started in 1935. Urban sprawl and the merging of municipal authorities since then made it, well, no longer an interurban. Sixty years later, it was merged with the Queen Street route (501) to create this long-ass streetcar route.
And wow, a pantograph on each carriage! That looks like a candidate for the óriáshernyó.

I just saw this one on nycsubway.org... gotta love that site
how's this for something similar? (It's not quite what it seems, it's actually 3 EMUs close together)

I'd give SkyTrain another 75 years at least. By the time Richmond is underwater, the Canada Line will be just fine. Forward thinking! But seriously, though- BC Electric still exists in the form of the Southern Railway of British Columbia (SRY), it runs on former BC Electric tracks thru Surrey and out to Abbotsford and Chilliwack. Of course it's diesel now, and all freight, but there's been talk of putting commuter service back on as far as Abbotsford, maybe Chilli. I'm sure you've seen that crazy 4% grade behind Torwin's old place? That's the former interurban. I think SRY runs several times a day as far as Abbotsford, and a daily train to Chilli.
Well the latest I've heard is for the Expo Line to be built as far as Langley, then to meet an interurban that runs down the central reservation of Highway 1 to Chilliwack. Oh well, given progress on the Nevergreen line (or lack thereof), the chances of this happening in our lives is slim to none.
Oh, and the Mk1s are nearing the end of their 30 year lifespan.

It's sad to know that the South Shore Line is planing to remove the street running tracks and move them some where else, they just don't know that, that part of track is what makes railfans from the country come to Indiana, all they need is the funding for it and there goes a part of history and maybe some tourism in that part of Indiana.
Reminds me of a kinda' scary little story.
I was taking the Blackthorn Express TRANSPO bus down Bendix/LWW, and right as the train was coming, the dumbass bus driver decided to get his thrills by beating the train. The right-side gate smacked right down on the roof of the bus, I'm amazed that it didn't break! LOL The train was about only a block away still....if only I had it on tape....where's you railfans camping out on the tracks with your multiple cameras when I need you? lmao
